Paul ,maybe you can help me with my network problems.Ive been banging my head against the wall for 2 weeks! When i network render one of my two machines hangs up.It can be either machine. Each machine has its own maps path.It works for a few frames and then one will hang.I have a p120 48mgs and a p90 32mgs ,lantastic 6.0 ,nr2000 network cards. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Mike

Mike: Let's see what we can figure out about your troubles. Has your setup ever net-rendered properly or is this the first time out? Do the machines render o.k. on their own? Could it be that you have POWER.EXE executed in either of your startups? One of the more common hang-ups is not synching the clocks on the two machines, does your setup do this upon booting? I don't run Lantastic but there are several people here that do. Another great source for Net Render tips is found in the libraries, "Confessions of a Network Renderer" – 3DSNET.TXT – Library #3. – Bob Ritger

Hi rob, my machines have not net rendrered successfully yet. They render fine on thier own. and i don't know what power.exe is ,but i don't think its running.I will check out that txt file and see what it says.I do have them in sync. thanks Mike

Mike: Alright, lets get those machines cranking. You say they run fine on their own, were you rendering flic files or sequential targas? Net-rendering is not a way to create flic files directly. You are rendering .tga's right? POWER.EXE is a utility that most new 'green' PC's use to save energy, blah, blah, blah. Get rid of it or you won't be able to much animation rendering. Synching the clocks as I mentioned is a common gotcha' but it looks like you've got that one nailed. – Bob Ritger

Rob,where do i find this green utility? in my bios?I m not rendering flic files.tga's. Clocks are synced up .i read the txt file and it said what i pretty much know all ready. This might be a clue though, when i view my error log in the net que there is a message that says "bad anim file" or something like that. you response is greatly appreciated Mike

Mike: Power.exe is a utility which is automatically executed from your computer's startup routine. Many new computer vendors put this "feature" in their boxes to appeal to those interested in saving electricity. After x minutes or seconds your machine, if sitting idle, will basically go to sleep until you hit a key, move the mouse, etc. It can be thought of as a screen saver for your cpu. So anyways, this utility is either in your config.sys or your autoexec.bat in the form of a line: C\xxx\POWER.EXE. I would edit the file and simply put a REM in front of this line. BTW, have you verified that you have plenty of disk space for swapping and temporary file storage on each system. Does your log file show that your machines are swapping to disk when they are network rendering? Are you rendering to 'SERVER' or 'LOCAL'? – Bob Ritger

Rob, I believe one of the machines is swapping. But i also have tried using one machine to render and working on the master and the master locks up.could this be a memory problem?im using qemm 7.5 could that have anything to do with it .I have tried rendering to server and local niether work.Getting tough huh? thanks Mike

Michael: Yep, its getting tougher 🙁 One thing I know nothing about is Lantastic, we may need a Lantastic opinion to verify that part of your system. I think you can discount QEMM 7.5 as a problem, I've been successful with it as well as a bunch of other forum members. However, this could be the culprit if you are using the Stealth feature of QEMM. This can cause conflicts. Are you using this feature or skipping it when you optimize your system with QEMM? – Bob Ritger

im using it, Do you know how or if DPS has a forum on cserve .i just bought a perception and need the software upgrade. Thanks Mike

Mike: I'd try a QEMM setup without the Stealth feature as a possibility to get you network rendering. As far as DPS goes they do not have a forum on Compuserve but they are always part of several discussions here as you have seen. They do have a BBS (416/754-8368) and their Internet site is (www.dps-inc.com & ftp). – Bob Ritger

Rob , ill try qemm without stealth and get back to you .thanks so much for the info. Mike
