#Sync questions

Heres a few questions for the Video techie inclined folks out there,
1. I have some hardware that needs two video sources to be "sync-locked" in
order to allow overlayed switching. The manual says only "in cases where the
sources can be sync locked to the same time base, it becomes possible…." My
question is: How do I sync-lock two video sources? I thought I might have to
route through a TBC but I'm not sure I can run both video sources through one
TBC. And if I run through two TBC's would the sources be "sync-locked"? I AM
confused!!
2. The hardware also has an input for an external keyer for choma keying. The
manual refers to "feeding the unit signals produced by an external chroma keyer
(sometimes also called color keyer) or any other type of keying device." It
goes on to say "you may find theres keyers from such suppliers as Sony,
Intelligent Memory, etc" Does anyone know of such an animal, what it does or
where a person might pick one up?
3. Last question, I promise. (For now anyway 😉 ). There is a I2C serial
control bus input on the box. The manual says "The VTU has a RJ-type plug-in
jack that will permit the commection of other I2C compatible devices, as well
as external analog control devices, (such as sliders, etc)". What the heck is
an I2C serial control bus and what other devices are out there for it? BTW,
it is I squared C actually.
Any and all comers are welcome to comment, suggest, harrass, poke fun at or
enlighten me. The unit I am referring to is an IV-24 for the Amiga but the
questions refer to the video side of the house. Thanks in advance to any
answers or suggestions on finding the answers.

Ok here's my 2 cents worth.
You would need a sync generator (I think they are also refered to as Black
Burst Generators). That signal would also be refered to as HOUSE SYNC. You
would feed that sync into the TBCs reference in connector. You most likely
would have to get a video distribution amp which would take the one sync
source in and give you at least 4 outputs that you would send to each TBC
and what ever else needed a reference in. That way there would be no
timing differences as you switch between devices as you record. I also
think you have to keep the coaxial cable lengths the same from the
distribution amp to each device or you may get delays in timing.
Chroma keyers are available from any video product distributer such as B&H
or G&G.
I have no info on the I2C connection.

Thanks for the info. What you say makes sense. I can see there is going
to have to be more out of the wallet expenses before I have something that will
really work the way I want it to. Story of my life I guess. I do have a
cheapie video distribution amp from Radio shack now that may work. The TBC's
are going to be the big expense. Any recommendations? I have been leaning
toward the TBC+ from GVP but now that they are backing away from the Amiga,
maybe the kitchen sync. Anyway, thanks again for your insight.

I recommend the Personal TBC-IV from DPS. That is the one I have. DPS
manufactures stand alone, PC, and Amiga products. They also manufacture the PAR
card (I have one of those to). 🙂 They have a BBS in Canada on which you can
call in and download free updates to their software which they seem to upgrade
monthly.

FWIW, I have the KitchenSync and am in love with it. (Really! We're getting
married next May.) Seriously, the kitchensync has two channels and will sync
the two inputs to each other, giving you locked syncs. If your cables are the
same length, you could switch between sources with a push button, if you were
so inclined. As to your other needs, check out the local A/V sales and service
shops. Sometimes they have older pro/industrial gear for cheap. Good luck!
