#OS2 not paging to disk

Rendering 3ds4 under Warp I get "Render out of Memory" when I exceed the 64 meg ram installed in the computer. From a virtual Dos window without the settings modified the Scene Info shows 65 meg memory allocated at time of error message. On a session using proper settings adjusted for 3ds4 Scene Info shows 79 meg memory allocated at time of error message. In short, the computer won't page to disk after running out of ram while rendering. I do not have this problem rendeing under Dos without OS2. After ram is used 3ds4 pages to disk to complete the rendering. Does anybody have experience with this problem? Advice appreciated. Peter Landeck

Peter… Up your memory limit in DPMI settings regardless of your physical ram this should allow you to render assuming you have the hard disk space to page out to… Your message seems a little confusing to me but if it's paging to disk and then tells you it's run out of ram (virtual at this point) it could mean you've run out of disc space.(I'm sure that's not it … too silly… but I've done it before now! ) As far as I know there's no upper limit to OS/2's virtual memory size… Actually if anyone knows different I'd love to know. You might also benefit from not running in a window… IE go full screen DOS session. -john- DAS.

Thanks for the note John. I've tried upping the DPMI setting to more than 256 with the same results. I can't believe I'm out of disk space since 300 meg minimum is sitting free. And I do run in full screen mode. Can you run in window mode? Nothing seems to let the rendering complete excepet staring out from DOS. Then I had more than 500,000 paging faults. Thanks, Peter Landeck

Hi Peter I'm not entirely sure I'm understanding your setup correctly but a couple of suggestions spring to mind… (sorry if they are silly and you already checked… and er no it isnt a good idea to run it in a window.) There is a setting in OS/2 config.sys (I forget right now which I'll check if you cant find it) that needs to be set to SWAP before OS/2 will swap out. Is OS/2 doing any paging at all can you tell? The other thing is I think there used to be a problem with Himem not recognising more than 64Mb ram. I think that's for IBM dos V6.3 . (I seem to remember seeing a fix on their UK BBS for this) I'm grasping at straws for you here though… I do have a good text file for optimising OS2 I'll take a look in there to see if theres any help. (I could e-mail it if you want it or upload it if anyone else wants it.) -john- DAS
