A couple of weeks ago, there was a discussion here (I think it was in The
Perfect System thread) about SuperMicro motherboards, and how, of two
similarly-numbered models, one was newer/faster/better than the other. I seem
to have deleted that thread, and now can't find it. Does anyone (perhaps those
originally discussing it) remember or know which was which?

Hello there. I have the better SuperMicro board. It is the SuperMicro
P55CMS board. The other is the P55CMA board. The cmS denotes Pipe-line burst
cache as opposed to cmA which represents asynchronous cache. (non[Pipe-line
burst]).
You can also have either 256K or 512K cache. Pick the higher one since you cant
later increase it. Hope this helps.
P.S. Is 1:05 still the record?

Thanks, that was just the info I was looking for. And I definitely intend to
get 512K. A call to Micron revealed an error in the Computer Shopper test —
They don't offer a 512K upgrade, contrary to what was in the article. Hence my
interest in the SuperMicro. (Its evidently-unique slot configuration is another
plus)
And yes, to the best of my knowledge, 1:05 is still the record. Closest is
another P133, Triton, no cache mentioned, 70ns RAM (non-EDO), how much not
mentioned, with 1:10 with display on and 1:11 with no display (go figure…).
'Course then again, nobody with an Onyx has run it yet… <g>
(I'm trying to drop a not-so-subtle hint here, in case ANYONE with an Onyx
happens to read this…) <bg>

You won't regret a SuperMicro motherboard. Extremely high quality. I have a
older model- the P55-CWA. This was the series before the P55-CMx. I have never
had a problem with the board, and even with async. cache it is FAST! I was one
of the original threaders.

Thanx for your confidence-inspiring words. Though some faced with my quandry
(gotta get a new box by Thanksgiving) might opt for an SMP board in these days
of Waiting-For-MAX, I think that by the time MAX does make its appearance,
there'll be significantly better options available. So I decided to go for the
best single-proc I can manage, and the SuperMicro looks like it. Now, with any
kind of luck, I'll be able to pop a P150 on it and still meet my timeframe…

The new boards should handle the 150 with no problem, and rumor has it that
SuperMicro has a dual board in the design stages right now, so it may be
available by the time MAX ships.
