#Sentinel Pro Dongle

I have had 3D Studio for about 4 years now, I have release 4 now. I have been
having problems with my PC and I have made some changes software wise, so many
changes that I am not sure what I have done, but now I am at the point where I
try to run 3ds4, but I get the error.. "SentinelPro must be plugged into
parallel port." Well, it IS plugged in. I don't think it is a problem with the
dongle because I can't get the printer to print either. Is there something in
the software of the PC that I may have changed for this to take effect?

Hard to say. Hook up your printer and try this in DOS:
dir > prn
If that doesn't work, then your parallel port is either not connected inside
your computer(for some reason) or the port has gone bad(it's been known to
happen<g>).

Okay, I tried that, but the curser just sits there and blinks. What was
supposed to happen?

I just put in a new board because I was having problems with my mouse, but it
turns out it was the mouse that was having the problems. I kept the new board
because it is newer =). the mouse works great now, so I don't think it is the
board (which is what the port is connected to).
I have not been using 3D Studio for a while, now I REALLY want it back! You
don't know what you are missing until you can't get it to work! Thanks for
your help.
I'd check that new board. The parallel port may be set to none or lpt2 by
jumpers on the board. Also, there may be jumpers to set the port to enchanced
mode, which would cause at least the dongle not to work — but since the
computer just sits there when you DIR > PRN, I'd say the port's either
disabled, set to LPT2 (which you could check by typeing DIR > LPT2) or is bad.

I hope that is not an insinuation that I have a cracked 3DS setup. I have
paid for mine, thanks.

Just reading the message should be enough to tell you to dismiss it (not to

We have the same problem – some people are saying if you have Acad 13
& 3ds it can cause problems – however I've tried switching the order of the
dongles and it's dosent seem to matter…I was going to try loading down the
line (terminate the line) with printer…but it looks like that
doe'snt work either….let us know if you get any info..there is some info in
the manuals – however it says the printer thing should work ??

I have four dongles on my machine without problems. I have AutoCad R13, 3DSR4,
Liquid Speed, and LenZFX. The machine is a Dell XPS100 with an enhanced par
port.

Well there goes that idea <g>…..WE have 15 digital 486dx2-32 and we never had
a problem with intermittent "can't find your dongel Error" until we upgraded to
Acad 13…the dongles have always been inside the machine…As far as I know
it's just appeared since Acad13…??????

I've got two dongles and no problems apart from the machine having to sit a
foot away from the wall!

Mike a great way to fix the
computer-2-feet-away-from-the-wall-because-of-too-many-dongles is to just buy a
serial or parallel cable and connect it before the dongles.
That way your dongles wind up on the floor.

Great Idea, problem is I'd just end up treading on them!
Better just to move the desk away from the wall, I have to do that other wise
I would be sitting about 2 inches away from the 17" moniter, eye strain or
what? 🙂

Okay, I have just put the old board back in, and it works fine. I don't know
what was wrong with the replacement board, but it didn't work. Oh well, I
guess I'll just use the old board.

I recieved this mail by mistake?
My problem is intermitted "error no sentinel plug pluged in" on 15 x PC
all with dongles…were an ATC….It causes lots of grief <g>

This is going to be a sketchy message, but I had a similar problem, and I
believe there is a file somewhere in the 3DS files that discusses various
things to try. The new enhanced parallel ports are definite possible problems.
You might search on Sentinel or dongle or lock and see what you find. If I
find it, I'll let you know the filename.
