#weird behavior
14 messages in this thread
Well, everytime I think I'm starting to like Animator Studio I discover
something totally messed up that makes me wonder just what the deal is…
Tonight I loaded a 306 frame animation, selected a 70 frame segment and
marqueed a section and added a filter ink to it. (this took turning off the
undo resources to get through, but was finally OK.) Playback of the newly
altered movie was fine, but when I try to save, I get a message: SYSTEM IS OUT
OF MEMORY OR OTHER RESOURCES. It leaves me with no choice but to bail out and
lose the changes.
Interesting thing is that this is on a P-5 60, 16 meg RAM, 590kb free DOS
memory, A clean (two week old ) installation of Windows 3.11, 60meg swap file,
clean install of AnimStudio, nothing running in the background, saving
frequently, etc. Generally when I've seen Windows apps crash they just stop
responding. Funny thing about this is that I can move around, turn on and off
tool bars, minimize and start other programs, etc., but if I try to save, (save
as, Close and save changes, whatever) NO GO!
A quick check shows that I have 79% free resources at start up, 73% after
AnimStudio launches and 60% when AS flakes out.
Is 20 seconds of 320×240 animation *that* much of an assignment for AS to
handle? Heck, it was an AVI that was saved at 256 colors (MS RLE) in Premiere
before opening in AS. It was about 3.5 megabites. AS turned it into a 28 MEG
file! I know it uncompresses the file, but at this rate one would need 90 or
more MEG RAM to work on 30 seconds of video effectively!
Any insight, help, excuses, mea culpas would be eagerly accepted…
Thanks!

sounds like you're saving using 24-bit lossless codec. what
settings/compression codec are you set for?

The file was "saved" without compression by no choice of mine. I had the
compression set to RLE 256 colors. After the reboot the file came back
uncompressed. it's interesting that changes made to a shorter 20 frame segment
using the same filter ink and settings saved fine, it was just when I tried a
70 frame segment that the problem arose. Also later attempts gave an error:
"OLE EXCEPTION: FACILITY:4, ERROR 0x40c7". Any ideas what that means?
Thanks!

hi again. all the info on your hardwares seems okay… but one key component
left out. what' your graphics card, and are you using proprietary graphics
drivers for it? (just checking all bases)

I'm using an ATI mach32 (ati version 2.3 drivers). Further experiments show
Microsoft RLE compression results in fragmented images and broken up video (not
due to playback but within each rendered frame). AUTODESK RLE saves in million
color rez, but when I use it in Adobe Premiere I have the option of different
color depth options. How can I control this inside of Anim Studio? I'll try
some more things and let you know…

check out Settings/Compression options… so far as i know, control happens
either through this panel (AVI CODEC or 256 color options and panel) or by
using another image's palette. please keep me in the loop on this.. i'm taking
notes.<g>

I am running AS on win 95 and 3.11 (seperate machines) and I get your ole
exception….. message when trying to 'save as' .avi to .fli / .flc.Did you get
a reply to your question on what this error message is and what can be done
about it

No reply/suggestions have been forthcoming.
It's funny, overall AStudio has great tools, but for me performance is a
problem. Whenever I bring it up w/ADESK they seem to insist that it's my
personal problem (setup, config etc.) I've been trying to get the latest Win95
friendly version, but so far no luck.
I'm basically at a standstill with the program at this point.

again, AAS was not written for Win95 in its first two versions (r1c0 and
r1c1)… however, r1.1 is now shipping which will cure this symptom on both
Win3.x and Win95 platforms. just uploaded a general notice on this.

Thanks for the info!

What's with this weird numbering? I mean, SOP for Autodesk is r#c# — what's
with this #.# business, all the sudden?
r1 –> r1c1 –> r1.1 ???
BTW, on the inside edge of the c1 CD, it says C1, and on the inside edge of the
1.1 CD, it says C2!!

<gg> can't answer that one. i don't work for Autodesk. but… the rev number
usually indicates a major upgrade and the c# usually indicates a patch.

since r1.1 (c2) is out now, and yes, c2 is on the CD, internally, i believe
r1.1 was called r1c2 for a while and perhaps c2 was never removed at production
time. in any case… r1.1 is the latest version, compatible on all windows
platforms except NT. and actually it seems pretty stable there too.

SHEESH! I can see I've got some catching up to do. I bought the original
release of Animator Studio. I had many problems with it that I thought would
have been solved with a more powerful system. Now I've upgraded and am ready
to reload the program. What do I have to do to catch up with the current
release, etc.?? BTW, I don't think I've ever sent in my registration, but I
still have my receipt and all that stuff.

SEND IN THE REGISTRATION!!!! <gg>
i serious. the latest release R1.1 is wonderful and Win95 compatible… speed
is faster, some problems resolved, very stable. it's well worth it, and
shipping. hey, it's free!
