Hello, is there anyone out there that uses Real3D for 3D work? I have lots of questions about using Real3D. From what I have done so far I think that Real3D is the best of all 3D raytracing software, but it sure doesn't seem to be very popular. I never see any Real3D objects on CServe. Even the Real3D BBS is baren. Anyone who uses Real3D and would be willing to answer some questions, please send me a note. Thank You. Craig

Craig, I have been using Real 3D for a couple of years on a hobby basis only. I can answer basic questions but I haven't used the advanced features much. Did you know there is a series of tutorial video tapes (3) out? It's a drag sometimes using a little known 3D software package on a little known platform.

Thanks for the reply John. I had heard about the videos, but I don't know how to get them or if they are any good. Have you seen any of them. I'm also using Real3D on a hobby bassis, although I did get one chance to show a bunch of school mates my 3D work. We had a dance and we used a projection screen TV. I put a few 3D text animations a tape for the dance. It's quite a pleasure to see your work on display. I think I would use it on a more professional basis if I know how to use it better. Craig, I have two of the Real 3D video tapes: The Basics (which is just that) and Motion Magic (which covers animation methods pretty well). They have another out called Optical Delusions, which covers Material usage among other things. I don't have that yet. The tapes are $69 each I believe and can be obtained from Avongard Products, 708-244-4179.

Hi John: Well for a 'hobbist' you sure can model! Thanks for uploading the ENGINE.JPG to the bbs – it really is a great image. I took the liberty of putting your name on it and posting it to the Realsoft FTP site ( uunorth.north.net ) – I understand the cserve people can now access Internet FTP sites. We are implementing a more intuitive modeling and object creation window that will facilitate things like; direct coordinate input, creation depth input value, angle for rotations, etc. People who have found the existing Measuring window too complex will enjoy this new developement. Also of interest is that the spline rendering will be sped up by a significant factor. Keep modelling Adam Godfrey RSI

Hi Adam: Thanks for the kudos on that engine model I did. I spent quite a long time on it but it was fun. Maybe I should upload it here. Looking forward to the improvements in Real 3D. It is a fantastic modeling tool. I am glad you guys have branched out on to other platforms and I hope you sell thousands. Now I have to go model all the components that go on the outside of the engine. Talk to you on the bbs soon :^)

Adam, what's the current version number of R3D? I've got, I think, 2.35, or something like that. I bought it from an individual and I never got around to upgrading to 2.42, which I think was the latest the last time I heard. Also, one of my disks was defective, but I guess if I ordered an upgrade that problem would be obviated. I guess my other question, since I just dropped in here and happily saw someone from the company talking, is what's the scoop on Amiga support of R3D? Will you be able to keep us current with other platforms by mostly just recompiling, or is that too optimistic? Paul

Paul, I just u/g my R3D2 to rev. 2.49. Its been a while since I messed with R3D2, my modeling skills have improved lately so I plan on giving it another shot. It seems to be a powerful package if you can get a handle on it. Not quite as user friendly as LW though :^( Not much support here it seems. ….John

John- >Not quite as user friendly as LW though :^ Yah, that was my impression. Still, it uses splines, which is a plus for me. I guess I'll probably upgrade, if it's not too steep. Paul

The current version number for Real 3D on Amiga, Windows and Windows NT is V2.49. I can send you upgrade pricing if you like, there is also cross platform upgrading available. There is an interim update coming out shortly featuring more extensive object conversion, import Essence and Imagine procedural textures, and some post processing such as lens flares. The converter will let you model using our full spline modelling tools and export objects to other formats like LW , DXF, Imagine and 3DS. You will also be able to import objects from those formats and bring them in with the heirarchies maintained as phong shaded poly meshes. Alot has happened since V2.35. The Amiga version will continue. Adam Godfrey RSI

Cool, yah, I'd be glad to have an upgrade pricing schedule. Paul

Craig, you might look at the latest issue of DV Magazine. The theme is 3D, and we look at 14 programs (including Real3D) in considerable detail… Lou Wallace
