#Prepurchase MAX?
7 messages in this thread
PMJI, but Kevin, what's this about pre-purchase of MAX? Did I get dropped from
some registered users list at Adesk and not get some crucial notification? Is
my dealer ignoring me? Am I to be PUNISHED just for <:(> missing Siggraph? Did
I miss some bargain price on the upgrade?
BTW, you guys are in LA, aren't you? Do you build systems? If so, please e-mail
me with pricing on some typical workstation configurations (just ballpark is OK
— I won't hold you to exact numbers).
Thanx

If I was Kevin, I'd reply "Oh, somewhere between $2,000 and $20,000, and you
can even hold me to those numbers!" :^)

Oh, a WISE GUY, ay!!! I bet you know how to stop somebody from poking you in
the eye, too!!! :%) (nyuk, nyuk!)

Me? Naaaaaaaa…… :^)

Stephen,
I'd go with Greg's numbers, although I think I'd start a little higher
<g>. Seriously, we're trying to design some new systems for MAX, SPEED RAZOR,
PERCEPTION, etc., but I'm not happy with much of what's out there right now.
I'm hoping to have a certain level of standardization and ready availability of
quality components. How do you feel about 10-slot dual-Pentium systems (6
EISA/ISA + 4 PCI, all full-length)? Would you pay any sort of premium for
systems based on that setup (with compatibility assured) over those tricky
Micron and other mail-order grab-bags? Care for a GLINT accelerator for MAX?
I'd love to hear from others on their desires. Since MAX won't run on our
nifty SGIs, would anyone like CSA to add Alpha systems (which do work with the
Perception card and Speed Razor, with 3DS MAX a possibility)?
As to the MAX reservations, you might want to read the Autodesk Press Release
info in the forum libraries. Here's the scenario for U.S. users:
Pricing for new copies of MAX is not set.
3DS R4 users can reserve (any time before MAX ships) a "migration" to MAX for
$495. After shipment, the upgrade price will be $995. Dealers should not be
taking any money at this point (waaay to early), but do need names & s/n# to
track for Autodesk, and to assist in forecasts. Those who filled out forms at
Siggraph expressing interest are probably even now being hounded mercilessly by
zealous Autodesk telemarketers for their s/n#s. You would want to follow up on
this with your dealer.

Forgive me for creating a tangent, here. But, do you have any idea why
manufacturers aren't building MoBds with 6 PCI and 2 ISA slots? Or even a pure
7 PCI slots? This really baffles me. Is there some sort of limitation in the
PCI spec.?
Let's see. PCI Video Card, PCI HDI (GL) card, PCI SCSI card, PCI PVR card, PCI
sound card, PCI network card. Now THAT would be a system!

James,
I'm not sure whether the current spec limits the number of available PCI
slots, but we certainly could use systems with more than 4 for our purposes.
Otherwise, some of these functions get divided amongst multiple machines.
