hello everyone in the Amiga world, I just thought I would pop in to ask for
some help. I will try to keep it short and to the point. my father owns my
old Amiga 500 and a 2400 baud modem. he would like to join CompuServe so when
I go to visit him I told him I would try to help him. I believe he is running
1.3? does that sound correct? what I would like to know amongst other things
is what would be the best GUI for him to use and where can I down load it?
next he has a meg of ram in the belly of the machine. do they have bigger, say
1 1/2 for 2meg chips that fit in the belly of the machine? if so where can I
get them? next and I believe last question, he some times types a letter then
half way into it he stops for lunch. when he comes back the system has locked
up! he is now in the habit of just saving and shutting down if he expects to
be gone awhile. does anyone know what the problem could be? I thank you all
in advance for your advice and help. I really miss my amiga and I know you all
out there try to help each other out so. lets see what you all can do. thanks

Re the Amiga 500: If you can update it to a more recent operating system
(currently, 3.1), he will have a far more stable and capable machine. And he
will then be able to use AutoPilot, the Amiga navigator for Compuserve. It
requires at least OS2.04, at least 2M of memory, and needs about 5M of hard
drive space. I'm sorry, but we don't have a navigator that can work with less.
If you can get him updated – you'll find a working demo of AutoPilot in
AmigaVendor Forum, Library 9, AP.LHA. It's a great program – makes everything
super simple to use, and saves lots of money in connect time.

I have heard there were internal expansions for the 500 greater than 1meg but
they were not simple plug in jobs like the 1meg board. You had to attach extra
wires from the board to the Amiga motherboard. You might find it hard to get
expansion boards for the 500 now. About a year ago I couldn't find anyone in
England selling accelerator boards for the 500, I had to send off the the USA
for one.
If you can afford a hard disc, most hard disc units for the 500 can be fitted
with RAM.
