First of all….I do not work for CompuServe and have nothing at all to do with
their policies. I know that CIS gives away copies of WinCIM, but they do not
give away copies of any of the 3rd party software that is produced and
distributed by others. You'd pay as much for TapCIS, OZCIS or OZWIN, NavCIS,
etc., as you would for AutoPilot.
Second: AutoPilot was written by a person who is not employed by CompuServe,
and Autopilot does not belong to CompuServe. It belongs to him. He deserves
pay for his work.
I'm really sorry that you don't prefer us and want to stay here. I have
friends who like Genie, too. I prefer CompuServe. And I love AutoPilot. I
guess we just aren't looking for the same things. Maybe you'll change your
mind one of these days and join us. We'd like that.

They were the first service I tried, but after continually running across
topics opened in 1987 and last responded to in 1988 (and this was in 1991) I
got fed up canceled my account. Disorganized, is the word the comes to mind.
Anyway, speaking of AutoPilot (:^} I have a question about the icons that
appeared in the vendor forum (I think you were the uploader). Are they reall
just little square buttons or am I in the wrong workbench mode? Is there a CIS
change comming that will make those Icons' tooltypes mandatory?

I didn't upload the icons – I only made them public and posted a message that
they were there. Someone else checked them out, and I don't recall who that
was.

the icons are "NewIcons" icons, i.e. they only work if you have NewIcons
installed and running on your system. It's downloadable somewhere in AmigaUser,
the file name is NEWICN.LHA. NewIcons is a new icon system which preserves an
icon's original colours as far as the current palette setting allows. Of course
they look best on a 256 colour screen… It also comes with some great(!)
background brushes. If you have a fast (i.e. not stock 68000) Amiga with OS 3.x
you should definitely try them out.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll pass though, since I try to avoid things
that attempt to replace system/OS functions. Not becuase they may not be neat,
but, since I use my machines professionally, it just adds another layer of
obfuscation when trying to get support on a product I do use.

I understand that point of view. However, if you want some nice new icons
that won't replace system functions, but simply give you a nice set of icons,
give Iconographics a try. They've just come out with version 2.0 (I have an
earlier version on my system now) and it should be available here soon. You
can replace some or all of your icons, it will use your own palette if you wish
(I did) and has a lovely icon installer that can also be used with other
(standard 8 color) icons also, even oversized ones! Worth the download to look
at it…:)

Ah! So it wasn't just MY system that displayed them that way! I must admit
I was a bit surprised to see them looking like that! Since I like the icons
I've got now for AP, I just deleted them, wondering whether they really were
supposed to look like that….sigh…

just for the fun of it – try out the NewIcons system (NEWICN.LHA somewhere in
AmigaUser) – if your Amiga is speeded up a bit and has a bit of memory to spare
you may even want to keep it on your system! It's done really neat – you can
even go back to your original icons if you don't like to NewIcons look – NI
just adds some (usually invisible) entries to your original icons' tooltypes
section or so which contain the NI icon image and palette information, so the
NewIcon system can match the actual display colours as close as possible to the
original ones. If you have activated NI you'll see the new look, if you haven't
you'll see the old look. If you decide you don't want it at all, there's even
an uninstall utility which removes the additional information from your
icons…

I did check out NewIcons and didn't really like the look of them. Thanks for
the endorsement though. One of the beauties of the Amiga is that each of us
can have our system look and act according to what pleases us; we don't have to
accept whatever someone else decides is good..<g>

You seem really knowledgeable about NI. I installed it and I really LOVE it. I
think it should be included in the next WB release (3.2 or whatever) It gives
to your WB a really professional look!
But I have a silly problem. The icons in the WB desktop (drives and "left out"
icons) don't show the NI icons. But if I get "Information…" from "Icons" in
the WB menu, the correct NI icon is displayed in the Icon Information
requester. If then I click on "Save", the old icon becomes a NI icon. So if I
want to see the NI icons in the WB desktop (not inside the drawers, that works
OK) I have to select all the icons (in the desktop), select "Icon
Information…" from the WB menu and then click on "Save" for all the icons.
Another silly problem is that the icon provided for the WBStartup drawer
doesn't work.
Any clue about what's wrong?

I have installed NewIcons and the "def_" icons in envarc:
If you've installed all icons including the all the "def_" icons and a you're
still not getting the WB icons then check;
You have the "PatchOpenWB" in your startup-sequence in the right place. (sounds
like you do, tho')
You have all the "def_" icons in your envarc: drawer (sounding like you do)
After that, I'd just unpack NewIcons to Ram: and check it's drawers to what is
in the HD drawers.
Also, Iconian1.93 is able to save NewIcons. Just can't go larger than 92×92
pixels (sigh), but you should see my AmiTCP icon <g>. Can we say 15k ?

I have to admit that I'm _not_very knowledgeable about NewIcons. I just
happened to find the entry in my AmigaUser catalogue und give it a try.
Personally, I like the look of MagicWB icons better, to me they look more
elegant than the (in my eyes) a bit clumsy designs of NewIcons. Well, I love
the technical side of NI, or rather WHAT it achieved, not necessarily the way
HOW it is done. Well, apparently this was the only way to stay 100% workbench
compatible and offer an easy way back to the old images.
Hmmm… I had no problems with disk icons etc. The only way I could _imagine_ a
thing like yours can happen would be if NewIcons is started too late in the
boot process, so the disk icons have already been rendered in memory with the
old images before the WB screen is drawn – does it happen with floppies
(without disk.info!) as well when you insert them?
What do you mean by "the icon provided for the WBStartup drawer doesn't work"?
It's just a normal drawer icon, isn't it?

BOOOMMM!!! Right on the target, mate!!! Well done!!!
The thing is that I removed c:newicons and c:deficons from my user-startup and
I ran them with the fantastic AutoStart by Ian Einman. The reason for that was
to save memory in order to run the Emplant in 24bit mode.
AutoStart allows you to run or skip the items you want in the WBStartup drawer,
and I had it in that way. AS lets you to run not only WB items, but DOS and
Arexx commands. So, by default, I was running a few startup items, and when
holding the left mouse button during the startup, I ran the whole thing.
I put back the c:newicons and c:deficons in the user-startup and everything is
OK now. Well, the WBStartup icon from the iconza.lha file still refuses to copy
itself on the WBStartup icon and the icons that PictIcon creates still show
like project icons. B-(
