Can anyone help me out with AMosaic2? I can't seem to set a temporary disk
area for the decoding of GIFs prior to display. I get a brief message that says
"Can't find temporary file area – serious problem" or some such, and then the
program fills my Chip Ram until the system crashes. I'm also finding the system
incredibly slow – much slower than AMosaic 1.2. I'm running OS 3.1 on an
A2000 with Commodore 030, four Meg of fast ram and one Meg of chip ram, and
accessing through AmiTCP3.0b demo version. I have a registered copy of AmiTCP
Version 4, but cannot make the install routines work for me.
I do have IINSTI15, but that is only configured for access via CIS or US
service providers, and not my UK service provider. I also have AMPREFS, but
this does not seem to make provision for the GIF decoding thing.
Any help much appreciated.

GIF decoding? You are using datatypes, right, with the ZGIF datatype
specifically?

Yes, sure am. Actually, the program now seems to want to load everything to a
file that it can't find. I've set a download path in Mosaic prefs, but this
seems to be ignored. The Installation notes talk about Env and Envarc files
being included in the down load, but I can't find them. There is also reference
to something called Mailcap that I can't find either. Any ideas?

I'm shooting in the dark here, but do you have the following entries in your
env:Mosaic directory?

OK, just to be sure, you don't have a directory called Mosaic in your ENV:
directory assignment?
If not, then you didn't install AMosaic properly. Check the docs. In the mean
time, I've emailed you the necessary files in a lha archive. Needless to say,
you'll need to edit them some, and also make a corresponding Mosaic directory
in your ENVARC directory and put the files there.

No I don't have that directory – the version of Amosaic2 that I have seemed
just to be the program – no docs, no installer. I've been trying to download
the docs from the Mosaic site, but without the correct bits & pieces all I get
is system crashes <G>. This should sort things out.
I'm away for a few days, so not next to the main machine, but I'll try the
whole thing again when I get back.

Your UK provider should provide you with the data you need.
Anyway, if you have the AmiTCP manual, just take a look at it. Really, I learnt
more stuff from there than from anywhere else. Nevertheless, The Internet
Starting Kit, written by Adam Engst is quite good reading as well, and the Mac
version has MacTCP and everything to get into the Net in a diskette (included)

It's not AmiTCP that's giving me problems, it's Amosaic! But I'll persevere.
