#A3000 HD floppies

Software Hut (in USA) was selling them a few months ago for $120 or so. They
required filing the plastic slot a little bit to fit my 3000 but work fine.
NOTE, do not follow the A3000 manual and move the jumpers on the mother board.
I chased around for months thinking the drive was defective until I read a
message about using MSDOS drives which had a off hand comment about these
jumpers. If you tell the A3000 that a second drive is there (ie move the
jumper) the mother board makes the HD feature inoperable (never sees the HD)
the new drive just acted like a low-density unit. It works fine without the
jumper, the OS still sees the second drive and can determine which type disk is
in there. (OS 3.1 but worked with 2.04 also).

I recently moved a HD floppy from my A2000 to my A3000 and have been having
trouble with since. Can you tell me more about not moving the jumpers; where
did you get this info and what drives does it apply to? I can't remember what
brand drive it is or where I bought it from but it is designed for the A3000, I
had to use it without a face plate on my A2000 but it worked fine there. The
O.S. sees my HD floppy as a 880k drive, do you think that if I change the
jumpers back that it will recognise it as a HD floppy? (I guess I didn't need
to buy that new "Dell" HD floppy after all)

DO you have any info on what this "Dell" floppy is? I've read about it in

Combs<< Yes I can tell you about it since I just received mine a few days ago.
It is very small and thin, black matt finish, has no pass through so it has to
be the last floppy in the chain if you have more than one external drive, reads
and writes 1.76mb & 880k Amiga disks and 1.44mb & 720k MS-DOS disks. The
no-click program I am currenlty using does not work on this drive but that may
be due to my setup and not the drive, I haven't checked this out yet. The
click is quiet as is the drive when accessed. I haven't used it much but am
happy so far. I bought it because my old HD floppy drive was acting up and I
want to get ShapeShifter up and running soon and I knew I would need one for
that. I bought it from Software Hut, who I have had good luck buying many
items from in the past for $119.00 plus shipping.

As far as I know the Dell drive is not available as an internal model. It
was developed as a joint venture by Software Hut, Better Concepts and perhaps
Dell computers themselves. I have only seen one other mail order house other
than Software Hut and BCI advertising it at the $119.00 price. The ads also
state that this price is an introductory price and that it will go up soon.
Software Hut also advertises another brand name HD floppy drive that is
internal (Chinon I think, check your last issue of Amazing Amiga) it sells for
about $134.00 I think. I hope this answers all your ??? if not give Software
Hut or BCI a call.

PMFJI, but I am in Holland and just bought a Dell HD ext. floppy for my 3000.
It was a simple matter of plugging it in and it worked. No problems and it
works great. Hope this helps.
