#Pentium OverDrive PV83

Just put in my Pentium over drive chip in and I'm on cloud nine. What a
difference it made in 3D Studio. An animation that was taken 20 min.. a frame
now is taken 10 min. 3D Studio takes advantage of the processor since it's
still a 486 but a souped up 486. I'm glad I wanted instead of getting a
Pentium. Now I can wait a little longer for the P6 chip to come out. I jut
thought I would let everyone out know.

No it's still a 486 running at 83 Megahertz Pentium. 3D Studio release 4 is
optimized for 486's and since I'm still running 486 mother board it's going too
take advantage of the speed.

Price is around 299.00 and you can get is at any Comp U.S.A. and FRY's.
Too check system requirements you can go Intel on Cserve and find compatibility
for certain P.C's . Look in the overdrive library. If you have a ZIFF socket it
will work. Meaning another row of pin slots surrounding your C.P.U. I'm really
happy with my P.C's performance now. It will satisfy my needs until I can
afford a P6.

Not necessarily so! One of my 486's has a Zif socket, but still not
compatible! (Packard Bell system). I know 'cause I tried. It may run until it
burns up!

Yes I've heard of certain problems like that, but I heard it was with the MT28
chip this one released in Sept. is a new one. If this a problem with the new
over drive chip I would like too know. Thanks.

I doesn't do any damage too try if you have the right mother board.

The POD83 is $269.00 + shipping from Insight. You can always sell your 486
chip after the upgrade

Some people still use 386's . The 486dx2/66 still sells for about $125.

I've already got my 486/66 chip sold for $110. Lots of people still use
486/33's for things other than 3DS.

I have a EISA VLB with a ZIFF socket. It was a DX2 66 Now its a 83 megahertz
pentium. If you have the ZIFF socket you need to get the Over Drive chip a
you'll double you speed! Its a Intel Over Drive chip part number is
BOXPODP5V83.

What EISA motherboard do you happen to have? I have one system that
should have, but will not accept the Pentium OverDrive (regardless of the
compatibility lettered on the socket. Fortunately, Intel will take the chips
back.

Hi Kevin,
I ran into the same problem. Pentium Overdrive is not universally compatible,
regardless of ZIF socket!

I have a Hint-3/486WB. I purchased it for Comtrade here in Calif about a 2
years ago. It's call the EISA Dream machine. I checked out FRY's yesterday and
they weren't selling it any more.

Your welcome. Check out the file in the Intel forum listing what machines a
compatible. You also can call Intel's tech support. Their phone number for the
over drive support is 800-899-4508.

Don't wait a long time for P6 ! As recent articles showed that P6 is much
slower in 16 Bit apps, you have to have all your programs in 32 bit to take
advantage of this faster CPU.
Wonder if a DOS application like 3DS4 can have some 32 bit parts !

Yes 3D Studio is a true 32 application. All the way around from 3D Studio too
IPAS.

Are you sure ? 3DS is running under DOS that is a 16 bit OS with no 32 bit
parts ! Is the DOS extender has something to do with this other than breaking
the 640K barrier of DOS ?

I quite sure since we compile our IPAS with Watcom C++ 32 bit. What gives it
away is that you have to use Pharlap too tell 3D Studio how too handle swap,
memory , etc.. Yes the DOS extender is exactly it. 3D Studio can access more
then a GIG or RAM if running software like QEMM/OS2,etc…
