#PAR Restore problem
10 messages in this thread
Anyone,
I know how to make tape backups of PAR files but not how to restore them. I
get an 'unable to create .ani file' message. I'm using Norton Backup. It
doesn't seem to make any difference if I run C:\DPS_PAR\PARDRV /P , either.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Dave

Although I archive my PAR files in several ways (sometimes direct to tape) I
usually backup first to a DOS drive and then copy the files over to the PAR
drive. Is this the method you are using?

Robert,
No, I saved the files directly to tape.

Dave:
Try restoring to a DOS drive first and then copying the files to your PAR
drive.
I haven't tried going directly from tape to the PAR drive during a resore, I
don't even know if it is even possible. With a program like TapeStore which
makes a tape drive work like a DOS drive perhaps the restore from tape to PAR
would be possible, I don't know. Lets hear from other PAR users, I need a
good sampling of techniques so I can add a Q&A to the PARFAQ.TXT I just
uploaded. So, the Question is: Can you restore .ANI files from tape directly
to the PAR?

Yes, I do it using Tapedisk.

Thanks for your response on TapeDisk. As I mentioned to Alec I'll update the
PARFAQ.txt to make sure this is correctly spelled out.

Robert,
I use TapeDisk software to backup files to DAT tape. It works fine with the PAR
ani files, too. I have the tape drive on one computer and the PAR on another
and I can backup and restore directly — across the network — from the tape to
the PAR. I've done it many times.
The only negative aspect is that backing up and restoring to the PAR takes much
longer than with regular HD's. I don't know why but I'm used to it.

Thanks for the info on TapeDisk. I'll incorporate it into the PARFAQ.txt. I
suspected that these DOS-type backup methods could do a direct restore to the
PAR drive but I wanted to hear from someone who has succeeded.

<can you restore .ani files from tape directly to PAR> Bob, I'm still using a
Colorado 250 and can restore directly to the PAR no problem. As soon as the
Jazz Drives are available I'm getting one (with 10Gigs). Been waiting for that
breakthrough for a while.
Jeff:
Thanks for the info on using the Colorado to restore to the PAR. I'll make
sure the PARFAQ.txt file reflects this information.
