#New System Help?

I'm currently working on a "dinosaur" of a system (benchmark time 10 min..oh
whoa is me!) and need to upgrade my system in anticipation of Max. This system
will be made for me. I'd like opinions as to what type of components to buy:
monitor…17" (suggestions?)
HD…scuzzi 1.2 gig
memory…32 meg sim chip
CPU…P133 (suggestions?)
Video board…4meg 64bit (ATI PCI? Stealth 64 VRAM?)
motherboard…dual for 133 ( initially to buy 1 and possibly upgrade later?)
controller…Adaptec scuzzi controller
case…full; 250 watt

I'm also pricing systems and components in anticipation of max. I've
got NT up and running but plan to buy a new box for MAX. Looking at your list
I'm glad to see SCSI drives and controllers, however I did not see fast wide
scsi, which is what I'm looking at. In particular the Adaptec 2940w. The people
I've been talking to say that it is a great controller and I beleive that NT
ships with the proper drivers for it. Also you said you were looking at a 1.2
gig drive. My research shows for the money a 4 gig scsi drive is the best bang
for the buck. I particularly like the micropolis line of drives. Iknow there
were problems with heat on the 1.7 gig drive for the PAR, but the new scsi
drives have been reported to be quite nice. I would also look at 64 megs of ram
if possible, I know it is expensive, but will be worth it once you have large
project files in MAX. Also I would suggest a Micronics or Supermicro
motherboard with the Intel chipsets. Don't skimp on the mobo, drive and
controller…it's the heart of the system and buying quality here will pay
dividends in total throughput! Beleive me I skimped once…..never again! The
hardest decision for me is going to be which video adapter to buy. To Glint or
not to Glint….that is the question. With HEIDI I'm wondering if I can get a
good quality…say….4 meg vram/dram card and still have a nice shaded
interface in MAX…..that way I can pump the dollars into the mobo, ram, hd
controller and hd. Anyone else's thoughts would be greatly

Appreciate the input. Especially like your idea about 4gig drive…just
what I wanted to hear! I think a lot of people are getting ready to upgrade.
I also would like to see peple spell out their systems here on the
forum….could be fun. Could catagorize them at a couple different price
ranges. Yeah.

As we type <G>, I'm having Mark DeMazza at MIND Computer Consultants build me a
brand-new, from the ground up, P133 running NT 3.51 w/32 Megs or 60ns EDO RAM
and a 1Gb eIDE IBM root drive. We're also installing a DPS PVR and AD2500 and
a Micropolis 4.3Gb AV3243 SCSI drive. Mark has several clients who are into
high-end graphics and CAD apps and you might want to talk to him before you buy
somewhere else. He's very knowledgeable with regards to mobos/chipsets, etc.
and that is something you don't get from the friendly telemarketing guy at
Gateway or Micron.

Nicely put about Mark.
I think the big fish is getting closer now. I get my scale out every day and
measure, I can tell its getting closer to dinner time.

1.2 Gig is way too little — especially if you're going to have NT, MAX, 3DS
"Classic" & DOS, maybe Photoshop your virtual memory file for NT, swap space
for the 3DS's, output from the 3DS's, etc on it. Don't get smaller than 2.xGb,
and as is mentioned in another reply, the 4Gb & larger sport better $/Mb
ratios.
Also, I'd save some cash for a 3D-accelerator board ($2,000+).
