#Which NT for MAX?
13 messages in this thread
I'm getting ready to purchase WinNT so that I can upgrade to MAX when it comes
out. For network rendering do I need get the Server version of NT or can I
just get Workstation? Brent Bonet – POP! Multimedia Atlanta
Just get the workstation. The main differences in workstation vs server is
that a)workstation allows only 10 users logged in at once, and b)the server
version is optimized for handling the things a server has to handle (ie file
access, printer sharing and client/server).
Oh, _and_ there's the price!

Brent:
Oh! I didn't notice your specification for "network" rendering! That's a good
question. I don't know that I'm looking forward to the answer. In fact, the
fact that we won't be able to use non-NT farm renderers is quite depressing.
While we _will_ (at least, it's MY plan — I don't know about the bosses!) be
upgrading a bunch of machines come early next year, right now, I can use even
marginal machines to kick out a goodly amount of frames over a weekend — but
it doesn't appear that will be possible w/ MAX. I may find I'm using it for
little more than modeling for a while…. 🙁

Hi Brent,
<< For network rendering do I need get the Server version of NT or can I just

I'm sorry but there has been no announcement yet regarding this issue.

This is Jonas's way of saying that its too early to speculate on network
requirements for 3ds Max. However, you'll want at least one copy of
workstation so stick with that for now. It's great for medium level
performance peer to peer networking.

Brent,
I read that unless your are planning to use more than 10 machines that NT
workstation will do fine. I'm sure you will get more comments directly from
those that really know and can probably tell you why this is so.

One quick note regarding which version of NT to use…..If you have a mixed
platform environment like mine (i.e. PC's & Macs living in sin together) NT
Server is the only way to go if you want to talk to the Macs…..NT workstation
only supports appletalk for developmental purposes and not for regular
day-to-day networking needs.
Craig,
Good point Craig, I will try to pass along that info when I see the need in
someone's question next time.

hehe… PC's & Macs living in sin… LOL
In a perfect world, everybody'll have NT server. But alas….
Tell you what would be cool. I'll never do this 'cause I don't have time, so
I'll toss it out here.
Put up an NT server on the Internet, and offer a rendering service. People
could send an archived project file, call voice with their credit card number
to set up an "account". Then, you'd render the project and kick it out to
Tape. FedEx it out, and *poof*. You could automate that process somewhat, too.
The internet rendering service sounds real cool…think I will set one up this
weekend…now where is that terabyte hard drive I left sitting around.
🙂

It's stacked underneath that 2 GB shipment of RAM, next to the DEC ALPHA box in
the receiving room. 😉

If I set this up how many animations are you ready to send me.
What kind of turn-around would you like and how much are you willing to pay?
A personal e-mail with this info would be fine.

I'm afraid you've lost me. I was trying to impart my misguided humor on the
forum. I already have a service out of Newport Beach I use for renderings that
are too big for Choreo. Feel free to post your info in the libs for all to
see!
