#DEC PC's
2 messages in this thread
Hi Alan, Can you clarify the story with the DEC XL's again in regards to their
upgradablility etc. The following two clips are from messages posted to me
that I don't think I can completely answer:

WHat's that of XL motherboard limitations? It's the first time I hear this.
Can you tell me what's going on? I've two DECpc XL560, waiting for Alpha and
3DSMAX.
Oh, oh, I'm afraid you have bad news for me…

I too have fallen into the same XL590 ploy, what's up with this? Anyone done an
upgrade yet. I'm not about to spend big $$$$ on an alpha chip if it won't
scream.

thanks a bunch,
Tyler.
Tyler, please ask me these questions again sometime around the middle of next
week, OK?
I'll have more answers then (almost all of the DEC/PC folks are at a large
conference right now) and hopefully, some of them may be pretty positive!
As a preview, I can tell you that I'm fairly sure that DEC will implement a
(reasonable) way to now upgrade the old PC/XLs to (reasonably) current Intel
single and dual standards (remember, they *do* have to design an entirely new
daughterboard for every new chip configuration).
And please keep in mind that although signs are positive, Adesk has not as yet
announced plans for MAX re-compiliation for the Alpha platform. If/when they
do, the PC/XL's 233Mhz Alpha PowerGrade would probably do you just fine (should
be *at least* as powerful as a dual P5/150 running native NT apps)!
I'll hopefully know all the (DEC) facts soon…
So give me a shout next week!
Talk to you soon,
-Alan
