#Why the Flyers are late
19 messages in this thread
This is the latest. It seems that NewTek had a problem with the CD ROM
Disks. So, the Flyer did not ship Saturday as expected. Supposedly,
a shippment went out today, Fed Ex.
I'll know tomorrow. This is unbelievable. For once I've got the money
for something and I'm waiting for the item. Usually, it is the other
way around. And of course I'm paying interest on a check that is
just sitting on my desk.
Talk about luxury problems!!
Mike,
About two years ago, I heard about Panasonic's MX-50. I know I just
had to have it. So, I ordered it. The only problem was, I didn't have
enough cash at that moment to pay for it. However, I knew it would
take a few days to arrive, so I worked like made to finish up
outstanding projects, and was lucky to have some new work just come
into the studio that was unexpected.
By the time the MX-50 arrived (COD), I had scrapped up the cash to pay
for it.
This time, I got smart. I waited about a week before I was told the
Flyer would ship and I started calling on banks. The second one we
talked to made us a loan. In fact I rushed the loan through, since I
thought that I was going to have the Flyer on Jan 3rd. The banker
even came out to our studio to deliver the check. Talk about service
– even doctors don't make house calls.
So, now, there is the check, the interest started on Jan 5th, and no
Flyer. Ah, I just figured it out. I'm the reason the Flyers didn't
ship. I planned ahead. I should have just skipped the loan and I
would probably be working in NLE by now.
I've had the same luck with trying to take a vacation. Plan way ahead
and something always comes up. Jump in the car and drive is usually
the only way we ever get away.
Fred, Thanks for the info. That's more than I could find out today. I now have
everything I need BUT the Flyer itself (paid all that extra freight for
overnight shipments too!). Let's keep each other posted.
Gary
I let you know what I find out tomorrow.
I think we should have started a pool to see what date the Flyer would really
arrived.
This is almost as bad as wait for AVID to ship their system. I was promised a
system way back in September. Now, I've been told that it won't arrive until
last January. I waiting to see which comes first. The Flyer or the AVID. With
my luck they will both arrive at the same time.
AVID is sending me their system so that I can review it for Wedding Videography
Today.

I was visiting with a competitor yesterday at a bridal expo and he
mentioned his Flyer arrived on 1/5. He wasn't entirely happy though,
no hard drives yet. Thought you might be interested.
Michael,
Did you ask if he actually ordered hard drives that were available? Apparently
the 9 gigs are'nt available in quantity (Newtek approved) as of yet.
It's somewhat encouraging to here that mere mortals are starting to get their
hands on their very own Flyers though. I hope to have mine sometime this week.
Frank
To those also anxiously awaiting their flyer.
Finally, we have gotten our beta flyer including 2 2GIG drives. We were not
able to fully load the software on our other drive (its full and we're changing
back-up systems) so a lot of the functions are not yet working. Its too
difficult thus to draw any conclusions. But preliminary reactions (I haven't
seen it) from those who have played around with it over the weekend is 1)
beautiful video 2)good interface 3) lots of bugs – but the bugs might all
go away (idealism!!) once we fully load the software.
We want to get a 9 gig drive from NEWTEK so we can start doing serious stuff.
Michael:
How much free space do you need to load the software? I expect to
get a call from my dealer any day now. I sure would like to have
things rearanged befor then. I have heard 300megs, how accurate is
that?
PMFJI – The Flyer install provides a complete replacement for the
Toaster 3.1 software and adds considerably to the number of objects
and effects available.
You will need 300megs to install from CD-ROM, which is all that is
shipping with the 3.9 systems. You can pick and choose in the
install script, but I'd hate to have to leave something out.
I figured out a way to load the software to the Flyer drives, but that
is ultimately a terrible waste of expensive space. It does work as a
short term approach.
I found that you can't run properly off the Flyer drive, especially effects
which conflict with the video which is already accessing both drive in an A/B
roll situation. It's not recommended and you'll probably crash if you keep it
up.
Just thought I's add my two cents.
That's a combo I hadn't considered, nor did Newtek tech support. I'll see
what they have to say about it.
I hope to be up and running Wednesday morning if the updated install disks
solve my problem.
Keep in touch.
Hank
Videology, Inc Where you get all the P.O.M.P. under all
circumstances.
Your 300 mb number is the number that NewTek recommends. We were
unable to find enough room for most effects, PS fonts, Color fonts,
and a whole lot of other files which support CG, Paint and 3D. Also
missing from our system drive appear to be some aux. files which
control basic functions like saving projects. We decided to upgrade
(at high cost) with a NewTek 9 gig drive and use one of the 2's as
our system drive. Got to go! Keep in touch and let us know when you
get your.
Frank,
He said his hard drives were on backorder. He jumped on the bandwagon early
(last May/June). He didn't specify what hard drives he's waiting for.

I called my dealer today. He said my unit was ready. They had
installed the drives over the weekend and all I had to do was bring
in my Amiga and they would install the rest.
I'm picking it up tomorrow and I'll let you know late tomorrow night
how it works. Probably won't get any sleep Tuesday night.
Was your competitor unhappy about not having the drives or some other aspect of
the Flyer.
Fred
Fred, My Flyer will be arriving tomorrow. If I didn't just spend 3 12 hour days
on a project I wouldn't sleep as much either.But I did…..so I will. Later,
Gary,
My eyes are just too tired to see straight. Just got back from a 561 mile round
trip. But, I got my Flyer.
I'll take it into the office tormorrow morning and let you know what I think.
Fred
Fred,
He's not unhappy, just patiently waiting to put it to work, recoup some of his
investment.
Just like you, he can't wait for those all night sessions climbing the curve to
NL bliss. I think I'll wait until the two of you have all the bugs work out.
In the meantime, I'll call on his customers early in the morning, while he's
he's still asleep :'> If I'm sneaky enough, I might be able to order one of my
own!
Good luck and have fun!

BTW – I met you at the APV Convention, SIV session. You were pretty busy, but I
did have a nice conversation with your wife!
Michael,
I told Ellen that you said hello.
