Stephen,
The third file you needed to get while at the Thor WWW site was a socket
library. When installing this library you also need to add an assign.
Something about INET.
<<Ya, you have to unarc everything into the same dir>>
Same rumor the listserver suggested.
P.S. While back at the website picking up the socket.library, there is a beta
fix for a couple files in connect Thor. Click on the hypertext "ftp".
You'll be on going within, we'll say five minutes, (takes four to get all the
groups).

You can thank me later for updating your Sig.
Jim
James,
Yes, thanks for updating my sug. HE HE… I don't think i can fit any more
onto it.
I have the socket.library in my libs: dir and in the thor:libs/ dir. AmiTCP
uses it. When i try to use thor, AmiTCP is already running and should have the
lib. loaded already.
I've been having some trouble connecting to the web sit you told me about. So,
it might not be an option.
By the way, i had thor running once today and i have no idea how i did it. I
havn't been able to do it again. What do i have to assign and where. The only
assign i have is for the Thor dir.
Again, thanks for all the help.

<<What do i have to assign and where>>
assign INET: AmiTCP: to your S:User-Startup somewhere after the AmiTCP
assign.

I also had some trouble hooking up to this site until I registered the
PPP.device. It really speeds up the works. 50% I would guess.
Jim
Ok, The problem is definatly the socket.library. I went to the web page and
downloaded the lib and it is the exact same one that AmiTCP uses. Still no joy.
Thor is not able to load it in for some reason.
You said something about an assign?!? I'm lost here. I go online with the slip
on CIS and use Amosaic and all just fine. It's only thor i can't use. Whenever
i try anything with it it give me the error about couldn't load socket.library.
I know i'm just missing something small somewhere.

If the socket library got autoloaded by an installer of something I doubt you
got the docs. Which makes computing alot easier B^).
Jim
James,
Found the problem. The socket.library was not copied to the AmiTCP:libs/ dir.
Don't know how i got away with that for so long!?!
Thank you sir for all the help. I'm happy know.:)

PMFBI, I was told to forget the socket.lib, that when AmiTCP is runit creates
it each time. Nothing would work when I had it in the AmiTCP/libs. Good figure
<G>.

Gracia,
Everything seems to work ok with socket.lib in the AmiTCP:libs/ dir. Amosaic,
gopher, ftp, Thor, ect… I'm not having any problems with anything anymore.
When you run the Internet script, it loads the socket.lib from AmiTCP:libs/
So, it's looking for it there. Never heard of it creating it.

Steven,
Funny I don't have it there & everything runs <G>. BUT I did just look at the
startup file & indeed it says to load it from TCP:LIBS!!! I swear it didn't
work when I had it in TCP:libs & I was told it gets loaded (I thought it was
created, but od course I was wrong <G>) when INTER151 starts AmiTCP. I know I
don't have it in TCP:libs.

Gracia,
Everything works fine for me with or without the lib in TCP:libs/. Thor is the
only one that seems to need it there.

Don't forget the Assign.
The readme file that comes with the socket file really sheds (about a sun and a
half worth) of light on the subject. I think the author is waaayyy out there
(that would be a compliment 🙂 )
The more sockets the merrier
Jim
James,
That may all be true, though I have yet to read a read.me or Docs that actually
tells you how to use a program <VBG>. They usuually tell you how clever he is &
all the clever technical tricks that are included. I just reread docs & I'm
semi lost, I get the big picture though.
BUT I don't have the sockey file in the TCP:libs dir & it works & when I did,
it didn't! I seem to remember Chris saying it gets loaded (sorry I said
created) when his script start when I asked about it & I indeed found the line
in the startup script where it does say that BUT I don't have socket.lib in
ATC:libs!.

Gracia,
After some investigating I found the loadsocket file in my iNTERiNSTALL
directory which uses the loadlib command the socket.library author refers to in
his docs. After some more investigating I found the socket.library in my
HD3:AmiTCP/libs but not in my HD3:iNTERiNSTALL/AmiTCP-4.0/Libs directory. Could
that be our point of confusion? I also remember Thor kept asking for the
socket.library until I added "assign INET: AmiTCP:" (where did the
socket.library author come up with that anyway) to my Sys:S/User-Startup. Now
you've got me real confused because I'm wondering why I need the assign when
the AmiTCP:bin/startinternet has the lines;
Assign INET: Exists >NIL: IF Warn
Mount INET: from AmiTCP:devs/Inet-Mountlist EndIf Assign TCP: Exists >NIL: IF
Warn
Mount TCP: from AmiTCP:devs/Inet-Mountlist EndIf ; Start the internet `super
server' run AmiTCP:bin/inetd
if EXISTS AmiTCP:LIBS/socket.library
LOADLIB AmiTCP:LIBS/socket.library
I'm not an Amigados expert by any means so I guess stumping me should come as
no suprise. If anyone can enlighten me it would be appreciated.
Jim
James,
Truly a mystery, since I don't have socket.lib anywhere <G> & everything works.
I guess Thor works. I have run it but haven't used it yet since I haven't a
real clue what it gets on the NET. As usual rotten docs, just a programer's ego
trip of 'neat' technical things…some day someome or an article in mag will
make the connection.
We just got local area dialing to Winston, so my calls are free, free at last
<G>. I took the $25/20 hr deal because it matched anything here & I need the
extra hrs for union BBS I Telnet to & all those nice Conferences.
I find I spend too much time looking for stuff in the Amiga sections of NET &
can't remeber where things are when I want to go back to them. I guess it take
time to get used to.

I pondered dropping CI$ but it definately fills the void in that respect. Ease
of finding info. The internet access has been an added plus for the occasional
netuser.

Look at it as an "I get to pick your brain next" savings account.
Jim
James,
You got it, any time.
