#Bogus files erase HD
6 messages in this thread
I just read a notice of WARNING about a bogus version of (pkzip/pkunzip)
PKZ300.zip and PKZ300b.exe. It states that, PKWARE says someone on the
internet is distributing files under the pretext of being an upgrade to the
pkzip/pkunzip file compression program.
The item further states that it is NOT a version of PKZIP and it will try to
erase your hard drive if you use it.
The most recent version of pkzip is 2.04g.
A word of warning.

Yikes! Thanks for the heads up on that one.

Hi Dennis,
Ditto on thanks for the warning. One question: where did you read this
warning? I am tempted to post a news flash, so that the greatest number of
people have the opportunity to be informed, but I would like to be able to
quote my (your) source.
TIA – Kate Pike
The bogus pkz300 has actually been around for a couple of months. Sounds like
someone is just doing a better (?) job of spreading it around.

Well……,
I hate to mention it, but it is in a copy of the October issue of "Key
Solutions" which is Cadkey's newletter.
On page 4 is a Large Red "WARNING!" message that stated that PKWARE is aware of
the bogus files and wants everyone to know it is not from them.
A call to PKWARE should resolve the issue. I don't have there phone number.
BTW, Is this the Jeffrey Pike that used to be the sysop for this or the
Autocad forum?
Dennis
Hi Dennis,
Just wanted to drop you a line to say: Yes, this is the same Jeff Pike that
managed the Autodesk Autocad Forum a few years ago. I share the title of
Primary Sysop on this Forum with Jeff, altho' lately, Jeff has been so busy
with his "real" job that he hasn't much time to work here. You _can_ catch him
from time to time on the Autocad forum making entries under his assumed name of
Spacetech/Panacea.
I'll let him know you asked about him <g>.
