I was wrong about the Toaster not being able to read the GB Flyer drives. I
forgot, the dealer had changed the name of my FrameStore directory to
FrameStore2 and that was keeping the requester from finding it. Once I changed
the name back to FrameStore, it works fine.
At least some things work.
From what I could tell today, the problem I am having has to do with video
clips being recorded and played back. I recorded one clip that played back with
out any color except purple. Who said the Flyer didn't come with color
correction.
I re-recorded the clip and it was fine. Clips that I had recorded yesterday,
would not play back today.
Then I decided to play with TPaint. I think a lot of the features are missing
or at least they are on my version. But, one nice one that did work was the
ability to pull in an entire video clip.
I pulled up a 27 second clip. I think this is were you can do rotoscoping. I
kinda remember the concept from working in film. Now, I've got to figure out
how it works in video.
If you want to see how your system freezes, play around with TPaint. Some of
the features are there and some of the ones that are not will freeze the Flyer
with you press their button. A very expensive mystery game.
Let me know how things are working on your end.

Fred, regarding your problems with "purple clips", previously recorded clips
not playing back, and frozen frames during transitions: this is only a stab in
the dark, but it may be that the Flyer may not be matching color frames
properly, and the discontinuity is Sc phase (or SC/H phase) is hanging things
up. Does your Flyer manual have anything to say about color framing….whether
the Flyer is supposed to handle that automatically, or whether the user has to
worry about it somehow and follow certain proceedures?

To the best of my knowledge, the Flyer is locking to the Toaster Main out,
which is stable and unambiguous in terms of SC/H phase. In this mode, only the
Toaster is determining system SC/H phase, to avoid the Toaster and Flyer
disaggreing on input video phase. The flyer also has a larger lock range than
the toaster, so in general if the Toaster system you had locked well, adding
the Flyer should not cause problems (at least genlock problems).
NOTE: As the toaster output is fairly unstable (high frequency chroma jitter)
when run without a reference input, I would always try to provide reference
sync to the system.

The manual on this version is not complete. There is a great amount of
detail on Toster Paint, CG, and Lightwave. But, as far as setting up
the system – very little.
However, just to make sure that my system didn't have a bad file, I
re-installed all of the disk. The dealer had done this for me
originally, so I didn't know what to expect. My manual had nothing
included as far as installing the software.
When it was completely installed, I noticed an icon that read
something like HUE-Install or some such wording that I felt it may
have to do with color. It seems to run some kind of automatic
program. The video monitor turns all kind of colors. So, I would
imagine that this is some kind of color set up. There are not
controls to adjust or settings to change, so it is all done by the
Flyer.
Even after going through all of this, I still had a color problem. The
second time I recorded the video clip it was fine. Because most of my
problems seem to deal with video quality, I really believe that
something is defective with one of the components in my system. I
don't think there is much more I can do with what I have. The dealer
or NewTek are going to have to replace whatever is bad.

Have you run Flyer Calibration. It's a program in the program drawer
of the Newtek directory. I was getting clips running B/W or color,
or color shifted, until I ran that program. It recommends you run
AUTO HUE first, which sounds like the one you have run.

Had a smiliar problem with color. Newtek suggested I run the Flyer
Calibration program (which also suggests you run Auto Hue). It is
located in the Newtek drawer under the programs folder. It solved my
problem and I didn't have to rerecord the clips.

I found the calibration and Auto HUE. Ran them both. The color problem only
happened once. It happened to several clips, but only once.
I didn't have a chance to do any work on the system today, so I don't know how
good the calibration and Auto Hue did. I'll get back to it tomorrow.
