I'VE GOTTEN SPORT.BAS TO TALK THRU THE NULL MODEM VERY WELL. IT WORKS WELL WITH THIS MACHINE, BUT THERE IS THIS ONE SMALL PROBLEM. PIN 20 ON THE RS232 IS NOT BEING ASSERTED AS IT OUGHT. WHEN I LOOK AT THE FRONT PANEL DISPLAY OF MY HAYES, I SEE THE MR LIGHT ON, BUT THE TR LITE DOES NOT GO ON FOR MY AMIGA. THUS, WHEN I TALK TO THE HAYES, IT ECHOES OK, BUT IT REFUSES TO RESPOND TO MY "AT" COMMANDS. SO, OH HARDWARE GURUS, WHAT IS THE POKE TO COERCE THE CIA INTO ASSERTING PIN 20. IT SHOULDN'T BE HARD TO GET THE CIA TO ASSERT ITSELF. SDP Enter command, N for next message or <CR> for menu : n

You should have to do any special poke to get the CIA into asserting pin 20. what you could do instead is flip switch one (1) down on your Hayes modem. The switches can be found behind the plastic cover on the front of the modem. Darrell Grainger *** There are replies: 42142, 42164 Enter command, N for next message or <CR> for menu : n

Opps, i do that all the time. My last message should have started with 'You should not' rather than 'You should'. Darrell Grainger Enter command, N for next message or <CR> for menu : n

WELL, THEN WHY DOES MY CPM MACHINE GO TO THE TRUBBLE OF ASSERTING THAT PIN RIGHT AFTER I BOOT UP EVERY TIME? AND SO DOES MEX. I JUST WANT TO MAKE THE TWO MACHINES IDENTICAL TO THE HAYES MODEM. THAT WAY I DON'T HAVE TO TOGGLE THE SWITCH WHEN I ALTERNATE BETWEEN MACHINES. HOWEVER, THANX MUCH FOR THE HINT. COULDN'T FIND MY HAYES MANUAL AT 4AM LAST NITE. I can see no reason why the modem has to know if the terminal programs is truly ready and that is all switch one (1) does. What do you mean by your CP/M machine asserting the pin right after boot up? Darrell

right now, i hang up the phone by dropping dtr. i've had some problem with getting the hayes to hang up since i've flipped the switch. my bios has a handler for the RDR and PUN device which happens to be the serial port connected to my hayes. when I boot, i see the TR light come on just about the same time as when my CONsole is initialized. fact, that's how I know when to start filling up the typeahead buffer. so Coldboot is initializing serial ports when it starts up, and thus pin 20 gets asserted. I just want to make the two machines look identical to the hayes. sdp

Set DIP switch 1 DOWN on the Hayes is a quick fix. Enter command, N for next message or <CR> for menu : n
