This is probably an old topic, but I just received a thing from Commodore offering me a chance to upgrade my Amiga 1000 to a 2000 (at a $1000 trade-in). This brings up quite a few questions: 1) How much is it *actually* gonna cost? (ie. what's the average street price…) 2) What, if any, are the disadvantages to this? (The advantages I am already aware of…) 3) Anyone know of a Commodore dealer in the Phila. area carrying the 2000? The only dealers I've run into recently are Electronic's Boutique, which only sells 500's… –>Steve Bennett

Steven, The disadvantage is that you still have to shell out $1000 to get the A2000. Other than that….the A2000 will not accept most add on devices designed for the A1000 except you will be able to use any external drives, modems, printers and that sort of stuff. But not any of the side attached RAM add-ons, no GenLock, etc. No matter what the street price….you'll probably end up paying the full $1000 + A1000 to get the trade in deal. It has to do with the wholesale price of the A2000 and the way CBM is handling the dealer rebates. I'm not sure on any Philadelphia dealers….humm, West Chester is only about 30 miles outside Philadelphia….I wonder if CBM has a company store? Don

CBM does *not* have a company store… It's a real hassle… (I also simply do not understand why, when the company is only 30 miles away from me, this particular area always seems to be thre LAST area to get things and the like… As for the disadvantages… Well, since I *have* no add ons like that (with the exception of the 256K internal RAM expansion…) it really isn't much of a disadvantage as far as I'm concerned. The $1000 price tag is the only thing you mentioned which concerns me… Now I have to decide if getting a newer machine with a bunch of slots and an extra 512K of ram is worth the price… Anyone know what ASDG's 1000 to 2000 compatible card cage is gonna go for? –>Steve Bennett

Steve, I think 2000 and 1 will be around $799. Marlene

Don, My computer dealer is selling BridgeCards for one penny as part of the A1000+$1000=B2000 deal, so that's a point to consider if someone needs or wants IBM-compatibility…and happens to live in the Detroit area. Now, if they only had some B2000s to sell…. I understand that Commodore has fired its 2000 production manager for some reason related to the lack of 2000s on the market. Also, since my dealer announced its BridgeCard-for-a-Penny deal after I traded up, I've got a $500 credit toward the purchase of _any_ item in the store. Not a bad deal at all. Dave

David, You can get the A1000+$1000.01 and get both an A2000 and a bridgecard! That's a darn good deal…so good in fact, that unless your dealer can sell the used A1000 for about $800…he may be losing money on the deal…but what the heck…it's his store and he can charge what he wants. Don
#92538From: David KieltykaNov 8, 1987 3:19 PM
Don, Yeah, it is a darn good deal. Since I'm not restricted to getting a BridgeCard, I plan to apply the $500 credit toward a hard-drive and/or HD controller. Perhaps my dealer is losing money in the short run (tho I don't know this for a fact), but they're making a lot of loyal, happy customers (like me) into _very_ loyal, _very_ happy ones. In the long run, that can only be a good thing. Dave

Please tell me more about this fantastic deal!! Barry
#92581From: David KieltykaNov 8, 1987 7:20 PM
Barry, The deal with my computer dealer is that if you give them your A1000 and $1000.01, they give you an A2000 and a BridgeCard. This offer lasts until Commodore's "A1000+$1000=A2000" promotion ends…November 30th, I think. However, they've run out of A2000s (like everyone else, it seems), so I assume they're just taking orders or giving rainchecks or whatever right now. I don't know if other dealers are making similar offers, or if this is unique to my dealer. Commodore really makes me laugh. They're finally advertising, and they have a good A2000 upgrade deal, but they forgot one thing: you gotta _make_ the #$%^& computers before you can _sell_ 'em! 8^) Dave

barry, Don't worry, that is the healthiest position for them to be in, having completely blown the forcasts in terms of the number of machines they expected to sell. If you blow a forcast that badly, it's best to blow it the way they did, rather than making too many. Think about it… so much in demand that you have to go on a waiting list. Regards, Larry.
#92641From: Don Curtis/SYSOPNov 9, 1987 1:21 AM
Larry, While generaly it's somewhat ok to underestimate demand….in this case…it's more than underestimate….it's they flat didn't even come close. The A2000 has been available for about a month…and it's out of stock almost everywhere. This is the worst possible time for that to have happened. A new machine, Christmas selling season comming (here) and NO stock. If CBM doesn't get A2000's in those stores in a hurry, I'm afraid that some folks will say, "Well, I would have gotten an A2000, but couldn't wait any longer so got a brand x instead." My local dealer had 32 of them…and they are all gone. Don
#92655From: Steve AhlstromNov 9, 1987 1:51 AM
He had more than 32 (44 I think). But you're right — all gone with no new ones expected anytime soon.
#92656From: Steve AhlstromNov 9, 1987 1:53 AM
Also, on Saturday, I called every Amiga dealer in the Denver/Boulder area. No one had any 2000s left.
#92663From: Ben BlishNov 9, 1987 2:11 AM
Don — you didn't expect CBM to _understand_ their market, did you? <grin> –Ben–
#92668From: Don Curtis/SYSOPNov 9, 1987 2:25 AM
Ben, No…I honestly didn't expect them to fully understand the market… but then I also didn't expect them to underestimate it as badly as they apparently did either. It could have been a very happy Christmas for the marketing and production types at C-A….it's beginning to look like it's going to be a rather bleak one thou. At least it appears there are sufficient stocks of the A500 for the time being and they are also selling quite well. Don
#92674From: Ben BlishNov 9, 1987 2:50 AM
Well, _I_ have faith in CBM. They haven't done anything right since they bought the Amiga… they came very close with the A500, though the slot is on the wrong side, the power supply stinks, and it's not cheap enough, and 1 meg is still a low limit (Why is putting an address line on an edge connector such a big leap? <clenching fists>) At least, as you say, there are enough A500's for now. I wish I ran CBM. Oh, boy, do I wish that. I'd do it for food & board… –Ben–
#92705From: Richard Rae/SYSOPNov 9, 1987 3:19 PM
"I'd do it for food & board…" <Chuckle> Ben, it's not that I'm accusing you of being fat or anything… but how much do you weigh? I just ask because you must eat a LOT. You're willing to work for food and board? "Board" _IS_ food. I assume you meant bed and board or room and board? 8) Rick

Larry, Barry?? Ahem…. <Grin> I know that the guys at my dealer are not one bit happy about the shortage of 2000s. They're losing sales because of it…not everyone is patient enough to have their name put on a waiting list. In all seriousness, Commodore should be running the A2000 production line(s) 24 hours a day, cranking out as many of 'em as they can as fast as they can. My dealer has already sold over 150 A2000s, and could probably sell another 100 in the next few weeks if they were available to sell. It ain't a good situation to be in. Dave
#92799From: John DraperNov 10, 1987 2:26 AM
Dave, Barry? I still say that it's prefereable to having them rot on the shelves due to lack of interest by the public. They will be here in time for Christmas. If they aren't, then indeed it will be sad. I think the main reason they underestimate the demand for the 2000 is that they listened to all the people who said they wouldn't upgrade. An awful lot of those same people are currently running on a 2000. Regards, Larry.
#92885From: David KieltykaNov 10, 1987 8:27 PM
Larry, Yeah, I suppose you're right to a degree. But CBM did fire a pro- duction manager, which indicates, I think, that something more severe than an underestimation occured. Yup, _I_ was one of those folks who said they wouldn't upgrade. Now I'm very glad that I did…early. Dave
#92946From: John DraperNov 11, 1987 2:13 AM
So it's _your_ fault! <grin> Hope they get the machines rolling soon. Regards, Larry.
#93029From: David KieltykaNov 11, 1987 8:44 PM
Larry, Looks like the machines _are_ rolling now. According to one of the fellows at my computer dealer, Commodore is scheduled to ship 8000 Amiga 2000s sometime next week. CBM has 3000 units back-ordered, so this will put them ahead by 5000. Hope it's true. Dave

Not knowing what side of phila. you are on, I bought my 2000 at MDI in East Windsor, NJ.
#92583From: Steven BennettNov 8, 1987 7:34 PM
A bit too far from me… I'm in the northern suburbs (Eastern Montgomery County)… That makes the second place I've heard of in New Jersey, and none in my area. Period. (One would think you'd be able to buy Amiga's within 30 miles of Commodore HQ, wouldn't you? <grrrrr>) –>Steve Bennett
#92639From: Don Curtis/SYSOPNov 9, 1987 1:10 AM
Steven, If you're in Eastern Montgomery County…I've heard of a store in King of Prussia Plaza (or that area) that reportedly was selling the Amiga. I don't live there (I used to many years ago) but seem to recall someone here talking about such a store…you might check it out. Discovery Software in Wyndmoor (242-4666) may also be able to assist you since they write Amiga software. Don
#92854From: Steven BennettNov 10, 1987 3:18 PM
There *was* a dealer there who sold the 1000 when it first came out, but they dropped it when Commodore changed their pricing the first time… The only dealers there now are Games & Gadgets and Electronics Boutique, who only carry the 500… –>Steve Bennett
#92863From: Don Curtis/SYSOPNov 10, 1987 4:21 PM
Steve, I just got an ad in the mail yesterday from CBM (don't have it with me now) with an 800 # you can call to locate the nearest dealer. I'll try to remember to leave you another message with that number when I get home. Don
#92904From: Don Curtis/SYSOPNov 10, 1987 8:50 PM
Steven, The 800# is: 1-800-87-AMIGA They are supposed to have a list of all dealer's who are carrying the A2000 and should be able to find the closest dealer for you. Don
#92993From: Steven BennettNov 11, 1987 12:46 PM
Too late! <grin> I asked commodore via their hotline, and they redirected me to AB&T, the local Amiga 2000 distributor, who told me (almost exactly 10 minutes ago…) where the closest A2000 dealer was… (But I'll keep the 800 number as a reference, just in case…) Thanks anyway… –>Steve Bennett
