Help!;
I realize that at this point I should be digging in my pockets for some
tutor pay since this sig has been just that to me and hoping not to be tooo
much of a bother I submit my next (hopefully last) query. What is the best way
to set up an empty disk (just init'd) to recieve d/led files from here. When I
used my Aterm Disk a dir brought up all files including those I downloaded.
(working from cli).
With my fresh disk I cant seem to see ANY of the names of the files.
INFO will get me how many blocks used free but thats basically all the info
(not a pun) I can get on the disk. I would like to avoid this & set up a disk
specifically for use in downloading. Thanks, Ena
Also if anyone can point me in the right direction in the 2 manuals
that come with the Amiga I would appreciate that too.
Ena,
When you set up an empty disk for download files, give the disk a
meaningful, single word name such as "downloads1" or "down_loads1" or whatever
you prefer. I suggest a single word since some of the terminal programs don't
properly understand multi-word names. As Ben suggested, an underline character
(as in downl_loads1 above) to replace spaces is a good idea.
Then when CIS or your terminal program ask for a filename to download
to, type <diskname>:<filename> such as Downloads1:goodfile note the use of the
colon between the disk name and the file name—it is necessary to advise the
Amiga that you want the file on that particular disk. Using something like
df1: or df0: will only download to whatever disk happens to be in that drive at
that particular time, which may not be your download disk.
To view the files on the disk, from a CLI you would type DIR
DOWNLOADS1: and you should get a directory of that particular disk, or LIST
DOWNLOADS: will give you a list, including filesize of that particular disk.
Don
Don;
Thanks very much! That clears it up. 1 question though. Say you have a
diskload of prgs that were downloaded with the df0:filename command. Is there
anyway to write a directory for them (after the fact as it were) or to copy
them to another disk to include them in a dir? And last but not least will the
program CLImate help me in this job. Again THANKS! Ena
Ena,
Yes, CLImate will indeed make the job of moving files around easier.
"Creative" use of the CLI can also make it easier. For example, say you wanted
all music files in a directory called MUSIC. Then on your new disk, simply
MAKEDIR MUSIC and then download your music files to Downloads1:Music/<filename>
and they will be written to that sub-directory of your disk named Downloads1.
As to moving files into a directory…real easy, just rename them
including the path as part of the rename. Example, you have a file called
"music.man" on the disk and have now created a directory called "music"
(forget the quotes … I'm just using them for clarity) then you would type the
following at a cli:
rename downloads1:music.man downloads1:music/music.man
The rename is quite fast and doesn't leave you with 2 copies of the
file…the original and a copy in the new directory.
Also, I note in your message, you are refering to files downloaded as
df0:filename. Try to stay away from using device names (df0:) if at all
possible until you get familiar with AmigaDOS, try to use the disk name (in my
examples, I've been using downloads1:) as that refers to a specific disk rather
than a specific drive. Now, I seem to recall that you had a disk named
something like "cis disk 1" (here the quotes are important as there are spaces
in the name!). You can either rename the disk via the relabel command or you
can type the command I gave above as:
rename "cis disk 1:music.man" "cis disk 1:music/music.man"
Note the quotes surrounding the entire name, not just the disk name,
you will need that if you have any spaces in the name.
Don
Don (or Teach);
Thanks again, with the info I have gotten here I now at least have a
footing. I appreciate all the help. I have buffered the answers I got here &
they are like a mini-tutorial. I guess this is what makes the Amigaforum.
I hope to be able to help others in the future as well. I can say that
tomorrow (Fri the 13th) Im hitting civilization & will get to the bookstores
for some much needed reading materials! Again, really, thanks. Ena
Ena,
No problem…that's what I'm here for.
Don
Ena, one comment (though not on your question, which I see has been answered):
Most respectfully: BULL!
Keep your hands out of your pockets. We're all here to help each other, and
the concept of "tutor pay" is nonsense. Ask anything you want, and don't worry
about it.
A wise, wise hacker spent an entire day with me back in the days of the 8008,
filling me in on informatin for a college course I was supposed to teach on
micros. At the end of the day, I told him I wished I could repay him. His
response was that he had gone through the same thing, and helping me was just
his way of balancing the debt. I've taken that rule to heart, and now consider
anything information I can pass on, payback for that fellow's time and
kindness. I'll wager a lot of others here feel the same way.
If you MUST worry about tutor pay, ask everything you can and learn everything
you can… then help the NEXT batch of newcomers to the sig. After all, we all
started where you are. 8)
Take care!
Rick
Careful Rick, I've heard that 'wise hacker' now is wearing 3 piece suits and
working for IBM. Expect a bill in the mail anyday now.
He… he… he… 8P
Contradiction in terms. A WISE HACKER would NEVER wear a three piece suit.
(Much LESS work for IBM! 8)
