#New PAR Software

I was told by DPS today that a new version of PAR software (ver. 1.37?) will be
released in the next few days. Let's hope that small problems like corruption
and backing-up have been addressed.
I was also told that you should use the DOS copy to transfer to/from the PAR
because the PAR import / export is too unstable (in ver. 1.34B). Am I the last
one to know this?
Here's a thought – I recently lost 10s of thousands of dollars worth of
animation when my PAR drive got corrupted (I was trying to back-up over a
network), and I was left with pitiful little fragments here and there. After I
saved all the fragments to the local hard drive, I decided to reformat the PAR
drive (for the first time since it was new). I hit the Format button and it
took about half a second to erase and format the whole drive! I didn't have
any time to mourn the lost data! You'd think they'd put in a delay or
something so you could at least say some parting words…no respect.

Many of us have lost tons of .ani files in one gut-crunching keystroke as you
have.
To be ultra-safe and conservative a few are backing up the original
tga files instead of/in addition to the .ani files. Until DPS gets a handle
on the fix to this problem I'm saving .tga files. My $.02 worth.

All the FORMAT button does is clear out the directory and file area of the
drive. If you really want to do a full format, you can use PARDRV.EXE.
Just type "PARDRV -format:m" to fully format the master drive, and ":s" to do
the slave.

I was joking trying to vent some frustration. I didn't realize the FORMAT
button wasn't a full format. I'll do the PARDRV format and pay proper respects
tonight.
Can't wait to get the new software.

Is there any need to format the PAR drive when you first install it?

Yes, big need! PAR.EXE won't run unless the drive is formatted.
