Amega

Hi,
I am contemplating buying some memory expansion peripheral, and now
that the Amega by C Ltd. is going for $250 mail order I was curious if any one
could give me any pros or cons about it (does most software work with it, any
wait-states, etc.)
Any info would be a great help,
Reed Cottingham
I have one. I'm pretty certain it has no wait states. Perry's RRD (otherwise
known as VD0:) works fine with it. The RRD is a special case since it requires
memory that survives a warm boot (Ctrl-Amiga-Amiga); software in general either
does or does not work with extra memory; the brand of memory is not normally
relevant.
Unless things have changed since I bought it, the memory is *NOT* pass-thru as
bought (i.e. it has to be last if you have more than one add-on) but you can
fix it for around US$19.95 by ordering a "passthru board" from Cltd. I had to
do that to get my memory and SupraDrive hard disk to coexist amicably since the
combination wouldn't behave unless the memory came first, but it's probably
unfair to attach all the blame to Cltd for that – multiple add-ons are sort of
iffy in general from what I hear.
Barring the coexistence problems mentioned above, it's worked fine for me. If
you have any addons already or think you might ever get another, I'd order the
pass-thru board at the same time to avoid potential aggravations.
Doug,
Thanks for the info. Basically the extra meg is going to be
for Analyze, Scribble II, and DPaint II. I'm not needing a HD yet, so I can
probably wait on the pass-through add on. Glad to hear there is no wait
states! Can't wait till I can have a spreadsheet > 50K, Golly!
Thanks again,
Reed
Scribble II ?? Has Scribble! been updated recently (i.e. in the past 6 months
or so)? If you mean Scribble! it works like a charm with the extra memory. I
don't have the other two, but I would expect that they would work OK.
