#TAR for Amiga ?

There is a tape backup program from Marcus Wangel (hope I spelled that
right!) that works. You really need TAR to go with it. I have both on my
hard disk, and plan to upload just as soon as I can get it done. I have
several friends who are using this combination, and their tapes are working
fine.

Bill, I just today uploaded it, and it has not yet been made public, but
I'll try to meet the deadline so you can have it tonight. It is called
MWTAPE.LZH, and is in AmigaUser, Library 1. I have friends who are using
it, along with TAR, and are having great success. TAR was uploaded by Bob
Rakosky a day or so ago, and is in Programmer's Utils in AmigaTech.
Incidentally, the author of the program spells his name Markus Wandel.

Markus Wandel's program is actually a handler that can be accessed, as
can other handlers, by a logical name. You make a mountlist entry, and call
it, say, TAPE:, and you can then use a program to read or write to or from
the device. TAR is a good program to use in combination with it.

I have an Archive Drive that I would like to get hooked up…. have not
even tried to play with it yet.

The Archive drive I have (60 megs on a 600 ft. tape), works fine with
Markus Wandel's tape handler.

Betty, Well I got the BTNTape handler working with just a little tweaking
on my Xetec controller – and my tape IS non-standard so some of the
tweaking was for that… I was mostly just wondering what the procedures
are for re-uploading new versions of SW that someone else posted – IF, as
in this case, it appears to be buggy and the original author is
un-reachable. DIdn't CIS use to keep the uploader PIN somewhere – If you
could get me that I could correspond with him or her.
I see that a kind soul DID upload the tar from the UUCP, and have hacked
that up to work with the handler, but even that one seems a little peculiar
and the source is not up here and is not, apparently on the FF disk with
the rest of UUCP. The UUCP tar does a DOS ACTION_FINDINPUT on TAPE:
regardless of whether the actual data direction is in our out (e.g. tar -c
or tar -x). The BTNtape handler ALWAY pre-reads 2 tape blocks at Open time
if its asked for INPUT so tar'ring out to the tape with the UUCP tar issues
two reads then tries to write, which my tape (and most) cannot handle).
This, along with the fix to the buffer management of BTNtape, was
correctable and once I have tested enuff I will try to upload something.
I WOULD APPRECIATE an upload of TAR source if you have it.

Sorry – I don't have the TAR source. And I don't recall for sure – I may
have uploaded that BTN program. The uploaders are certainly not always the
authors. I upload MANY programs that I find on local BBS's so that they
will be here for our members. I wish all the authors would upload their
own, but that is just not the way it happens on ANY of the big boards. If
the author's address is not in the docs, I would not know how to contact
him – but I thought it was in there!

(bob@CS#philly@onrye%!?) – btw, can we on CIS access those sorts of 'nodes'
now ? I see from my WHAP docs that EMAIL seems to handle INTERNET (end even
FAX ?). Is there some sort of UNIX/INTERNET port going out the other side
of CIS ?
Actually the BTN is pretty good once, ahem, corrected. I will try to get
around to some sort of re-upload. I DO have tar source from an old UNIX PD
(GNU-ish) tape, which I can NOW access with BTNtape and the current tar.
It is not amigaized but I may take a whack at it and upload.
The newer tape handler upload (MWTAPE) seems to be cleaner code 'cept
that it doesn't really doc its mountlist entry (reading the source answers
all tho) and its docs say that the Amiga MOUNT command will choke on its
format, so ARP mount is required. This is wierd since the BTNtape
MOUNTLIST entry has the same group of keywords (except for quoting the
STARTUP= parameter) and MOUNTS fine on my non-arp system.

Judd, I'm sorry, but I don't know what kind of tape drive they are using,
and I was not able to reach any of them by phone tonight. I'll try to
remember to ask next time I have the chance. Should be soon.
