#HD delete retrieve

Do you know of a HardDisk utility program that will allow you to retrieve a
deleted file? This could be PD or retail. I accidentally deleted a very
important file and I would be willing to buy a program to get it back. I
have a 2000 with a 2091 controller and Quantum hard disk. Any help would
be GREATLY appreciated.

Quarterback Tools from Central Coast Software will allow you to retrieve a
deleted file from your hard disk. It just started shipping yesterday. I
don't know if it will retrieve a file after you've shut the computer off,
however.

Lee, there is a file in Library 9 called RECOVER, but I am not sure it will
do what you want. It is possible that you can get the file back with
DISKSALV in its interactive mode. Another way, but much more tedious,
would be to locate the file on the hard disk, find its hash value, and put
it back into the directory manually. THAT way is hard work! But it is
possible, and for a really vital file, well worth the trouble. I'd try
DiskSalv first.

What do you mean by "interactive" mode? My version of disksalv uses the
format Disksalvage dfx: to dfy: Are there other flags or parameters
that can be set ?

The docs with DiskSalv tell you which switches to use, but you can have it
ask you about every file it saves, and can save only the ones you want.

Being the sometimes impetuous guy that I can be….. I have deleted
several files accidently…. While disksalv is not exactly handy, can be a
bit tedious and is slow, I have been able to recover any lost file that I
really wanted back. If you have written to the partition then there is a
pretty good chance that you will not get the file back in its entirety.

I've found Dave Haynie's DISKSALV program very useful for retrieving
accidentally deleted files. This program is freely redistributable, and
should be available in one of the Libs here, or in AmigaTech.
Commercially, I just picked up a copy of Quarterback Tools last weekend,
and it claims to be able to retrieve deleted files, although I've not yet
had a chance to test this feature. QBT also optimizes disks (all kinds),
and can perform various operations on bad disks.
I have used QBT to optimize my hard disk and although it worked great, I
had to reboot after the reorganization. I couldn't exit the program – it
seemed to lock up after it was finished. It did a fantastic job of
reorganizing my drive, though. It really flies now!
BTW – Make sure you don't write anything to the drive you want to
recover your file from. If even one byte of your deleted file gets
overwritten, you can never get it back. Good luck!

I have used the program Recover2 to restore deleted files from my
harddrive, it can even restore a deleted files after you have made other
changes to the harddrive as long as AmigaDos hasn't overwritten any of the
blocks previously used for the file you are trying to recover. The one
drawback is that the program scans the whole disk and presents a list of
files it can recover. This is fine for a floppy drive but it takes forever
on a 40 meg harddrive! I think the file is here are Recover2.lzh.

Has you tried OPTIMIZING you HD with the B.A.D. software?? I heard it
was faster then QBT,and it did a neater job?? Is this true??
I don't have a HD yet, so I don't have the answers…… But I have used
B.A.D. on disks, and it works GREAT! Lemme know how things turn out,
because I plan to get a HD soon!
