#GVP A3001 & Quantum 210
8 messages in this thread
Hi, I am thinking of getting a GVP A-3001 board and Quantum 210 Meg drive.
Has anyone got any comments either pro or con on these to items?

Michael,
I have the A3001 package with the 40 MB drive and am quite pleased with
it. Only comment I can think of is that you should get at least 4 MB of 32
bit ram now, if you can afford it, as soon as possible, if you can't.
Otherwise you won't be taking advantage of all the speed possible.

Hi Brian, Thanks for the reply.

Michael,
I have the Quantum 210 and am using it with the TrumpCard Pro. I think
it's a great little drive and the only thing I would say is that I have it
divided into 5 40 Meg partitions, I could NOT get it to format to more than
200 megs. No big deal for me, I can live with losing 10 meg when it's less
than 5% of the total 'potential' storage. It's fast and quiet.

Scott,
You will always loose some space for each partition due to bad-sector maps
and other "system" infokept on the drive itself. SO the unformatted
capacity is larger than the formatted capacity (unformatted – bad sectors –
system storage = formatted cpacity). The other thin is how the "mega" is
counted. Some manufactures count 10**6, others count 1024 * 1024. There is
a difference ;^}
You ust have lots of RAM. With 5 partitions you must be using up about
about 50k-100k just for the HD. I ran the calculation once and forget what
it was but the "lost" memory per partition was the total of the SCSI
device, the number of buffers specified for the partition in the mountlist
* 512, and the HD .info file plus a couple k of system message list space
per partition.

Wayne,
Yes, I have alot of memory, 7 megs, soon to be 9 when I fill up the
A2620 card. I just got the upgrade from IVS for my TrumpCard Pro and it
still doesn't support AmaxII!! Serious deficiency when they were the first
company to support Amax way back when. I also have to reformat the drive to
make the upgrade, another serious bummer. Since I eventually want to think
about using their network I HAVE to do the upgrade (not that I wouldn't
have ANYWAY), tech junkie….)
Scott
Scott,
What do you back that monster up on (hopefully not floppies…)

How fast is you TrumpcardPRO-Quantum 210MB combination?
