#bridgeboard RAM

How much RAM can the xt-bridgeboard use? I guess it has 512K to start
with. The manual mentions using an Above Board 2 RAM board, but elsewhere
seems to imply you can only use up to 640K. Anyone have any input?

The XT bridge board has the same RAM limits as any XT 640K normal and
anything else is EMS memory (above 640K).

Like any other MS-DOS system…it can only use 640k directly.
However, just like any other MS-DOS system…it can also use EMS RAM if the
program you're running is capable of addressing EMS RAM.
To do that, you need an XT type EMS board.

Thanks Don. What about using a program like DesignCad F18 which uses a
serial mouse? Do you use the Amiga mouse? Do you have to install a special
driver to get the IBM side to use Amiga mouse, or do you have to install a
serial card and mouse on ibm side? Any help appreciated. Pat

With the latest version of the Janus software, you can use the
Amiga's mouse on the BridgeBoard side. Yes, you normally need to install a
driver…but that's included with the Janus software.
As to using it specifically with DesignCAD F18…no idea, never
tried it.

You seeem to be the person to ask BB questions of…
1. What board would be good to add 3 meg of 16 bit ram to BB ram?
2. do PC Hard cards use 16-bit of 8bit slots? Is there a good one to use
with the BB or would it be better to get a larger HD on th Amiga side and
set up BB partition?
3. Do VGA cards use a 16 or 8 bit slot?.
I'm looking into a way to get a 4 meg mem, 40 meg hd, VGA PC/AT into the
Ami. Possible?

1. No idea…I've only got an XT board, so have an 8 bit RAM
expansion. Never checked out the 16 bit expansion cards. I presume one
from any reliable manufacturer…but just to be sure, make sure your dealer
will take it back if it doesn't work.
2. Both…depends on the hard card. Most of them (that I've seen)
are 8 bit. I'm about 99% sure that Plus Development makes a 16 bit card
though.
3. Same with video cards, some autosense if they're in a 16 bit or
8 bit computer, some are 8 bit only.
Yes, certainly what you want is possible. Check with your dealer
for options.

I assume that you have a 2286 BB, other wise 16 bit (edge card) products
won't work.. If you need a couple meg of ram, Intel and AST both make
very good and very compatiable cards.. As a matter of fact I have an Intel
Above Board Plus (it is 16 bit but it will work in an 8 bit also!) with 2
meg of ram for sale.. The card does Extended memory and Expanded memory,
and supports the EMS/LIM Spec 4.0… If U are interested drop a note…
Buy a cheap vga card, 8 or 16 is not going to make a great diffrence unless
you are expanding your BB to a 386. Just make sure what ever you buy is
compatiable.. Swan technologies has a who line of cards that are pretty
darn good. They start at $119 for a 8 bit VGA card with 256k of ram, and
they go up from there. (800-468-9044).. If you shop around you should find
a VGA card for under $110…
16 BIT Hardcards are VERY expensive… You might be better off going
external or using a Amiga partition.. Some people are taking the interal 5
1/4 floppy (BB) and putting it external ( in a little case with a ribbon
cable). That why you can put a regular old (cheap) 5 1/4 inch AT hard
disc..

Thanks for the PC info. As yet I don't have a BB but I am being forced
into the PC compatible realm. The debate at the moment is Bridgeboard vs
laptop.

You had some good questions about the XT BB. Can I use them in CROSSINGS
(bridgeboard newsletter)?
You've probably got most of the answers by now, but here's some anyway.
Most major PC programs can make use of expanded memory (EMS) memory, and
there are a few boards that provide it for XTs. Unfortunately most of them
are off the market now (not enough XTs around to make it worthwhile).
Besides the Above Board, you can use the Fastcard IV (I have it) and the
Rampage (Ben Lott has one). And almost any other you can find. The Fastcard
will "backfill" to 640K, and use the rest for EMS.
As for the mouse – details are in appendix J of the V.2.0 manual. Some
programs need you to change the name of AMOUSE.COM to MOUSE.COM before
they'll recognize the Amiga mouse.
Dont't expect it to be like the Amiga mouse – it's painfully slow on an XT
BB!

I've had a bridgeboard for a couple of years, but don't actually use it
except to run one HP terminal emulation program… but plan to make use of
