Now I'm completely confused! Files I had found just a month ago are
impossible to find. I have some basic questions about this forum's
libraries: 1 is there a simple way to BROWSE for a file without first
knowing its loca
location? 2 is there a listing (catalog) of files that can be downloaded
for offline
inspection? 3 why are the expensive BBSs the most difficult to use. I've
spent
almost an hour looking for a spell checker that used to be in
in the amiga arts forum with no success.

The 3 Amiga Forums became 4 Amiga Forums a couple of months ago,
and as a result, many files were moved around.
As to your specific questions:
1. We'll soon have File Finder, it's a Compuserve program that
allows you to check for files in all 4 Amiga Forums at once. You can
search by filename, keyword(s), uploader's id and so forth. In the
meantime, you can do keyword searches in any of the libraries to see if
there are any files in that particular library that have a certain keyword.
2. There are catalogs in the libraries, but they aren't updatted on
a daily basis…so they're not always complete.
3. I can't speak for your impressions, I can only state that
Compuserve has the easiest to use libraries of several other systems I've
tried.
I believe the spell checker you're looking for is ASPELL.ARC and
it's here in LIB 7 (Text Utilities) of the Amiga User Forum. I found it in
about 30 seconds using a keyword search:

comments:
1. File Finder sounds like a good solution. In the mean time though, I
think I'll pass on searching for keywords in each of the 50 some-odd
libraries of the 4 forums.
2. I don't find all the catalogs. User's lib 1 didn't have one and lib 2
has one called cscat.lzh. It lists files in 'AmigaForum Help'. What are
the catalog files named? Even with File Finder, a compressed catalog is
useful. It allows me to locate things offline without fumbling with BROWSE
and various key words (e.g., 'spell' is a keyword for adventure games too).
If I know CS has what I need I'm likely to log on during prime time instead
of waiting for evening or looking elsewhere.
3. I've seen several other BBSs that are more difficult than CS too but
the best ones have global file searching and good file catalogs.
By the way, the file I'm looking for was listed as: 'ISPELL.ZOO/binary
01-Jul-89' and appears to be more recent than: 'ASPELL.ARC/binary
16-Feb-87.

I wouldn't search for keywords in 50 some odd libraries either, I'd
look in those that should hold that kind of utility. I looked in the text
utilitys library here and found the entry for aspell.arc. I certainly
wouldn't bother with libraries like games, clip art, etc.
File Finder will be a global (within the Amiga forums) finder and
is quite quick. You can have it search by filename, keywords, uploaders id
and so forth. It presents you with a list of likely candidates and where
they may be found.
I don't know why you'd wait till evening in any event, CIS charges
are the same 24 hours a day.

This is true unless you are accessing CIS from Tymnet. The surcharge then
jumps to about $10 per hour instead of $2 or $3. Lee Scoggins Some things

Yea, not all 50 directories should need to be searched but you and Betty
directed me to two different areas and I still can't find ISPELL. Did it
get deleted or is it misplaced in some games directory? Get the picture?
Oh well, I'm bored with it now anyway and I'm sure you are too. Let's get
on with our lives. Thanks! P.S. I'd forgotten that rates were constant but
the "hours of operation" message under RATES still makes the distinction
between "prime", "weekend", and so forth.
In AmigaUser, Library 7 (text utilities) I found
ASPELL.ARC/B 49K 16-Feb-87 Spelling checker by Mike Berro
There is a spelling game in Library 2 of AmigaArts. It appears that we no
longer have ISPELL. If programs are not downloaded for several months,
they are purged from the system. Our disk allotment is not limitless, and
we sometimes have to remove things that are not in much demand, in order to
put up new things.

If anyone cares I still have a copy of ISPELL as I picked it up on CIS
years ago. It is the only version I ever saw so I presume that it is the
most recent. The copy I have contains source and a dictionary. It is
about 293K in an ARC file, I just finished compressing it with LHARC and
it is 264K bytes long.

Please send it up. Our libraries should have a copy – though I really was
under the impression that there might have been an update sometime in the
past few months. I don't know where a newer version is, and we have had
requests for the program. Would appreciate the upload.

Our forums just totally outgrew their space, so we had to divide up
AmigaArts and AMigaTech into three forums, adding AmigaUser. You will now
find the applications like spell checkers in Library 13 of AMigaUser.
We will soon – don't know exactly when – have a finder program that will
let you search all four parts of AmigaForum for a file, but that will be
done when CIS has completed the preparation for it, and we don't know when
that will be. It WILL make it easier.
In Library 1, there is a catalog for the whole forum that you can download.
I believe there is both a long form (complete descriptions) and a short
forum(one line per program, 40-character description) of each catalog, and
this is in Library 1 of each forum.
