#BIZZARE VIRUS ND HELP

Hi all, Well in my never ending battle against the virus my computer picked
up a while back, I've got another rather intreguing problem which will
probably prove to be a nifty puzzle for those of you who are more devoted
hackers than I… I was using VIRUSX to go through my computer this am
after composing a rather nifty piece on the ol'keyboards yesterday….When
I went to print out the music on Dr. T's Copyist Pro DTP, – what I saw was
more rests than any human would purposely put on paper, and very few
notes… I, needless to say, flipped, – since my writing means money.
Anyways, – I went through with VIRUSX this am and here's the last of what
it said before I got stuck with some unbelievable stuff ( along with df1
doing it's own thing and an orange colour flashing on the screen ) It told
me that I had the " virus but it repaired that. Then it said that I had the
Xeno virus, but it removed it from RAM. Then it said I had the BGS9 virus –
but it couldn't check everything.. Then that the IRQ virus was in my
startup sequence file… Then it said it removed it, the dick was healed,
then that error removing, and then this: " Found Micorsystem HCS IIOpapa

.." And then I got the wierd Assyrian-like writing with df1: doing it's own
thing, and the colours…………. I could kill whoever invented this
bloody thing ( but I consider it my own fault, – since I never used to
download things, – and had no problem until I did begin doing that ).
SO, – any suggestions ?…. Keep in mind that I am not half the hacker
I used to be, – so as a result, any suggestions ought to be reasonably
detailed, – PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really don't think you can blame your problem on downloading things. I
download and check everything that is uploaded to CIS in the Amiga Forums.
I also download and check out everything on a local club board and on
another local BBS that is very popular with the PCPursuit crowd. I have
NEVER gotten a virus from anything I downloaded in all those sources. I
did once get infected with a virus – but it was on a game that I bought and
paid for, and was required to use the company's disk as a "Key disk". I
don't know where all of your virii are coming from, but I would suspect
that someone has put disks into your own computer that had them – it is
MOST unlikely that they come from downloads.
I do run wth VirusX running in the background all the time, but I rarely
ever even know it is there, since I so seldom see a virus.

Betty, I have only downloaded from the amigatech and amigaarts forums, –
EVER……. The only other BBS I belong to (BRS Collegue) I don't download
from…. I am now more interested in solving the problem,… Do you have
any suggestions ?….

It is almost certain that any viruses you might come across do NOT come
from downloading software. Almost all of them come from sticking infected
disks into your drive. I have even found them on commercial software! But
I have never, ever gotten any kind of virus from any download – and I spend
half my day up and downloading, almost every day. I download from all
kinds of boards, looking for things that are good, but when have not yet
been uploaded here – so I put them here. They are ALL tested before
getting up here. I never run my computer without VirusX running in the
background.
You might do well to delete any program that VirusX reports to be infected,
and then to copy that program back to your disk from originals that you
know to be clean. Keep VirusX running in the background at all times, and
don't accept anything it complains about. Be especially careful when you
insert a disk you don't know well – from the store, from your user group,
from a friend – from ANYwhere! Have VirusX running when you try anything
new.
If all else fails, back up your hard disk. Then,:
1. turn off your machine to clear the memory of any traces, and boot from a
Workbench you KNOW to be clean – such as the original one that came with
your machine. Put VirusX into the machine immediately. Be sure you are
using a REAL VirusX – there are a couple out there which are fakes and
which are themselves thought to be viruses.
2. Put back your files one at a time, watching all the time for warnings
from VirusX. If it complains about anything, delete that one right then,
and copy it from a clean source as soon as you can locate one. Reinstall
commercial software from the originals, making sure that the originals are
clean. (VirusX again)
3. When you have finally arranged everything properly again, make sure
VirusX is in your startup-sequence, and protect yourself against
re-infection.
Hope you can work this out without having to start over. Let us know if

What version number of virusx are you using.. it sounds like virusx itself
got chewed up somehow… could it be some weird protection on the
Copyist?? virusx doesn't always like special disks with copy protection.

Recognize that the is at least one version of VirusX out there that is
itself a virus.

Is the version of VIRUSX that is the virus, – is it the one in the lib of
this forum, – since that's the one I'd downloaded……….
If you downloaded the file from here, I can assure you that it's OK. I
can't vouch for other services or BBSs though.

Please download the copy of VirusX from CIS if that is not the version
that you are currently using. There is rumored to be a 'version' of VirusX
that I have heard is a 'virus' (trojan horse is a better term) itself.
I have been downloading files from BBS's and CIS since before 1985. I
specifically stay away from any BBS of questionable reputation. In that
time I have _never_ been bitten by a virus program. Please do not blame
downloads for your virus. When constructively and thoughtlfully pursued,
BBS software is a really amazing asset to your computing needs.
