take it right out of the box and start playing or working or talking to it
on your TV. The *great* software? First, Where In the World Is Carmen
Sandiego?, the game that teaches you geography. Then, there's Tetris, a
famous game, but never displayed as well as on the Amiga. Finally, we're
also including a word processing program. All for a price that's less than
$500.*
"COMMODORE EXPRESS(tm) Amiga has been sold to more than 1 million people
worldwide. How much are we committed to our customers? This much: if
anything goes wrong with your Amiga, call our toll-free number. If our 24
hour 365 days a year hot-line can't figure it out, Federal Express will
come to your home, pick up your Amiga, fly it to us, where we will fix it
and get it right back to you. All at our expense.**
"After arguing so strenuously for the importance of Amiga in your life, we
really, truly wouldn't want to keep it from your any longer than was
necessary."
"See an exciting demonstration of the Amiga 500 at any of these stores.
"Apex, HH Gregg, McDuff, Swallen's, Boscov's, Leiser Superstores, Software
Etc, Video Concepts, Famous Barr, Macy's California, Sun TV,
WaldenSoftware. For additional stores call 800-662-6442".
Tiny print:
"*Based on average selling price of Amiga 500C at above retailers as of
10/90. Actual retail pricing may vary."
"**Subject to provisions of consumer limited warranty."
"Additional memory may be required for some software programs shown".
Numerous trademarks listed at the bottom too. (I left them out….my hands
are tired from typing this!)

I tell you want folks….you have to see this ad for yourself. It's a
little corny at first, but it packs quite a punch.
I'm sure the critics will have something to say (they always do), but I
think it's a great ad, and I'm sure it's going to sell a bunch of Amigas.
Steve,
Thanks for typing ALL that in!! I had heard that the new ads compared
Amigas to Nintendos – but this is not at all what I had pictured from the
rumor I heard at our club meeting last night. This sounds good.
Betty
I wonder what other magazines they're advertising in?
I think CBM is starting to gain some speed and is starting to sell more
Amigas. At the very least, they're going to do well because the Toaster is
starting to get out there.
Keep your fingers crossed! <grin!>
Steve
I'm ready!! By the way, I went into the local Highland store today on
other business, and learned that they do NOT carry Amigas. The salesman
with whom I was talking has an Amiga 500 at home, and said he had tried to
persuade his manager to see about selling them. He really WANTS Amigas in
his department. I was just sure I'd read that Highland stores would be
selling the 500C.
Betty
One of the local tv stations heard we had a Toaster in the store a couple
days after we got our demo unit. They called up & said they were comming
over to see it, before we even had a chance to learn enough to demo it
properly. The chief engineer, his assistant, and the graphic guy all came
over in the station's van. They even brought their own genlockable camera
to run the two-camera demo. The VT is generating a lot of interest in the
video production biz, we've been getting a lot of calls about it. … It's
a blast to play with too! -Jim
Even people I've talked to at Commodore are looking at the Toaster as
the product that will push the Amiga into success in the US, just as DTP
did with the Mac. It seems like it is a natural for most professional uses.
We'll probably see quite a few VARs selling Video Toaster packages without
even labelling them Amigas.
— Ethan
That wouldn't surprise me in the least. As for VAR's packaging the
Toaster, that's possible too. The Toaster install software gives you the
option to boot up directly into the Toaster software. You never even see
the workbench. Put the Amiga into that Bomac tower case with an expensive
label on it and sell it for $50K. 🙂
We gave another demo last night for a nearby user group. There were at
least 3 or 4 people from one of the other TV stations…. At another group
about the same distance in another direction, the Toaster demo was SRO.
-Jim
What did those TV people think of the VT? Are they going to get one?
Steve
They were impressed, but planned to come back and play with it some more.
Since then, I've spent enough time with it to demonstrate it acceptably.
About the only negative thing I heard them say was that the effects looked
too "pixelated" when the wiped-in image was small. As to them getting one,
it's probably a case of talking the station owner into it. They've already
got gear to do most of that stuff. We took a 3000 over to their studio a
couple weeks ago in an attempt to transfer our homemade commercial to 1"
tape. They gave us the big tour… but we still ended up using the 3/4
edit.
-Jim
Steve:
I've seen the ads in People and Life.
Clint <VRLI>
I got this ad in a direct mailing to my house. The ad included coupons for
20% off for software purchased at Software etc. or Waldensoftware.
Darron
Outstanding. :^)
BBS->Williams.Ben[AA7AS]
I went out and grabbed Redbook just to see these ads. (Tore out the ads,
threw the mag away.. :)) Sharp ad… sure makes things look impressive. I
like it! A nicely done job… takes advantage of Amiga's strongest points
without belittling the computer.
–Beth
I'll have to find an issue or something with the actual ads… the
description had me saying "it's about time"
And believe me – if I don't like something, I'll say so. :^\
BBS->Williams.Ben[AA7AS]
Ben,
In Glasgow, Redbook is on the same rack as the National Inquirer, if I
remember right. Rumor has it that Redbook is coming out with an Amiga
Technical issue next Spring. That makes three.
Michael
What is RedBook?
— Ethan
Ethan…
Redbook is a magazine whose editorial and advertising base is primarily
orient ed toward the housewife market. It may have other redeeeming
features, but I haven't seen an issue since I lived at home over 20 years
ago.
Michael
You're pulling my leg, right? Eh? <grin>
BBS->Williams.Ben[AA7AS]
Remember….you heard it here first. Nudge…nudge
Michael
Ben –
In a copy of the November 19, 1990 edition of People, purchased off the
rack in Monterey, CA, a four page Commodore ad was placed between pages 70
and 71. The ad pictures an A500, and a lot of software including Bars &
Pipes, The Animation Studio, Sim City, Where in the World is Carmen
Sandiego, Deluxe Paint III and Distant Suns. The ad starts off with the
question (in very large capital letters) "What to get when your kids'
brains outgrow NINTENDO?"
I've also seen another print portion of the new ad campaign. For a couple
of weeks there has been a display ad in Navy Times (and probably other
papers published by the Times Journal Co., such as Army Times, etc.) which
starts off with the statement "Just when you thought it was safe to use
your own computer". Of course, the centerpiece of this ad is a great white
shark coming out of the monitor on top of an A3000.
Jeff Schweiger
They are using the same picture shark/monitor in their ads in student
newspapers at universities, only with a different caption.
— Ethan
I saw a new TV ad last night, and thought it quite good. It showed a young
boy playing a game with Nintendo, and then said something like:
On an Amiga500, he can still shoot down planes (pictures of kid playing
arcade game), but he can also fly them (excerpt from Flight Simulator)….
or design them (showed him using a CAD program)….and then write his term
paper about them (picture of him using a word processor, complete with
graphics on the page), and so on. I thought it an excellent ad.
Betty
What channel broadcast the commercial? Was it a national network, local,
or cable?
Steve
Sounds like an intelligent ad, but I wish my Amiga 500 had not come with a
picture of an 8 year old child on the box. I can convince many of my
colleagues to buy an Amiga for wordprocessing, etc. But the 500 is NOT a
child's computer and shouldn't be given that image.
True, if that ad had been in Time or Business Week or something, it would
have been way out of line. But since it was in Redbook, a mag dealing with
family just coming out of the gate for Christmas, I like it… grin.
–Beth
The ads are in the new issue of Life (Who is GOD? cover) and I assume Time
also.
-Chas
Steve –
I saw the TV ad for the first time last night on the 10'clock News on the
Oakland/San Francisco Fox affiliate (Channel 2 KTVU). Pretty good ad.
Jeff Schweiger
Steve, I'm sorry, but I did not look to see what channel it was. I know it
was not cable, because we don't have cable. I think it was one of the
networks. I saw a different one tonight, same general theme. This one
mentioned that there were scholarships available for people who were expert
at (a number of things on which the Amiga was shown to do them well), but
there were none for good Nintendo game players. I don't think they
mentioned Nintendo by name, but that was sure the idea.
Next time I see one, I'll try to note the channel, network, etc. The one
tonight had Montgomery Ward's name under the final frame of the ad.
Betty
Steve,
I've seen the ad here in Denver. I've only seen it once, and I
can't remember during which show, only that it was during "prime time" and
that would have made it on either the local NBC, ABC or CBS station.
If they're doing it like last time, their ad agency is buying time
on local stations rather than buying time directly from the network. I
believe they feel they get better coverage for less $$ that way.
Don
Don, I think the ads are covering the top 7 or 9 or somesuch local
viewing areas. Last time it was 17 or 18. Sounds like local per-station
coverage.
— Ethan
Great. Really great. I hope they snag a lot of those kids. Darwin knows
they have no idea how to snag business people… but c64 experience shows
they DO know how to grab kids.
