#hard-drive problem

Can someone out there help me? I have a Seagate ST277N and a Hardframe. I
have it set up in two 30 meg partitions. I have an A-2000. I recently
started having problems with it/them. Several weeks ago, I tried to write
something to DH1: and the drive wouldn't stop spinning. I tried rebooting
but it wouldn't stop spinning. I had to turn it off. It worked fine after
that for a couple of weeks and then did the same thing again. A couple of
days ago I was reading a file from DH0: and I was told that there was a
read/write error on that drive. I rebooted and it was ok. Then a few
minutes later, I tried to list DF0:. It accessed DH0:, said that list was
an unknown command. I used used diskmaster to see what was going on and
when I choose DH0: it showed it as being completely empty. I then used ls
on the drive and it said that that volume is empty. I then took an info of
that drive and it showed as being 25% full, which is correct. During all of
this the drive has started making alot of noise. It sounds as if the head
is bouncing around in the drive, sort of a hammering sound. And it will
occasionally make a very hi-pitched whining noise. Also when it is doing
this it will not boot off of a floppy in DF0:. I just turn it on and hope
it will work for a while and try to use the harddrive as little as
possible. Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions, guesses? Thanks, Stephen

When you say the drive wouldn't stop spinning, did you mean the that the
drive access light stays on? As far as spinning goes, an HD spins all the
time.
I must say that it sounds like you are hearing the cries of a dying drive.
Have you checked the +5 and +12 volts feeding the drive? That might be
possible cause.

The light stays on. I tried to reformat the whole drive and after having to
reboot because it locked up the computer several time, it was done. I then
formatted dh0: and dh1:, rebooted and it started to make the most horrible
noises. All I can do now is get the computer to recognize both partitions
as bad. Am now back to floppies. HELP!! Thanks for the reply, Stephen A

Sorry to say, but with all the noises you describe, it sure sounds like
you've got a dead drive on your hands.
