Can anyone tell me if 2.0 will work in a 1000?

2.0 works great in a 1000, but you have to add a 3rd party board that adds
an A500/2000 compatible ROM socket.
I used a 2.0 ROM in an A1000 equipped with Greg Tibbs' Rejuvenator board. A
much less expensive way to get the ROM in is to buy DKB's KwickStart II
board.
Because of 2.0's new larger size, though, you can't use a kickstart disk.
DKB's board lets you switch between the 2.0 ROM and a disk-loaded
Kickstart, though.

Denny: Do you know if the DKB board will fit in an Amiga 1000 that has
the Spirit 1.5M (full) board installed? Also, how can I upgrade to a fat or
fatter Agnus, or can I? If you can't answer these questions or would prefer
to tell me where to go, please do so!! (I mean for the answers!!!)

The DKB board fits in the 1000's 68000 socket, so I'd guess it should work
in a Spirit-equipped 1000.
To upgrade to a 1MB or 2MB Agnus chip, you need Expert Services'
Rejuvenator board. I used to own one of these, and they're GREAT. I had the
full Enhanced Chip Set (the 1MB Agnes and the SuperDenise), and Kickstart
2.0 in ROM (it has a ROM socket), as well as a MicroWay FlickerFixer
plugged into the Rejuvenator's video slot. There's now a version available
that uses the A3000's 2MB-CHIP RAM Agnes.

Thanks for the plug Denny. The spirit board fits the 68000 socket and
stands quite tall. Might be a case clearance problem if another 68000
device is plugged in.

Denny, Thanx for the info!!! How can I find about both of these boards –
the DKB and Rejuvenator? Also, do they have any problems with expansion
devices outside the 1000? Can you put a 68020 or 68030 into either? I am
currently running an Amiga 1000 with the Spirit 1.5M board fully populated,
a 68010, new PALS that I got at the same time as the Spirit board, and the
infamous Wedge hard-drive interface with both a Seagate 20M half-height AND
a VERY OLD FULL HEIGHT 30M hard-disk with KikStart 1.3 (on disk) and
WorkBench 1.3.2.

At this point in time…no, 2.0 will not run on an A1000.
There's a BIG IF though. If you've upgradded the A1000 with a
hardware add-on that's been designed to accept and properly address the new
ROM, then yes…it will work.

Didn't I read here that Commodore was going make a version of 2.0 for
the A1000?

Not that I'm aware of. After all, the A1000 only has 256K of WCS
(kickstart RAM) and 2.0 is 512k. A bit difficult to trim it in half and
still keep it the same.

Commodore engineers did comment once that a version of 2.0 for the 1000
would appear later. However, since a kickstart ROM board works so much
better than a soft-loaded 512K KS on a 1000, my guess is that it won't
happen after all.

While Commodore Engineers may build something..that doesn't mean
that Commodore marketing will sell it. Thus the engineers saying they can
build an A1000 version…and one appearing at the marketplace are two
entirely different things.
My personal opinion is that an A1000 version will never show up.
Commodore marketing twice as offered trade-ins specifically designed to
pull A1000's off the street. I believe the total number 1000's sold was
somewhere in the 100,000 range. Of those, I suspect that less than 1/2 are
still in use but not upgradded by a rejuvenator, multi-start or some such
board that allows a ROM'ed OS. Of that number, I suspect that only about
1/2 of the owners would be interested in upgradding to 2.0. So your
potential sales are 25,000… not worth the effort to come up with a way to
make a plain jane A1000 run 2.0 without a hardware upgrade.

The question of 2.0 availability for the A1000 will rely on Commodore
keeping their promises from a few months back.
However, one thing is certain … it cannot be used without a reasonable
amount of memory upgrade. After all, it is 512k long (and there is no way
they could reduce that economically) and so would need a minimum of a 1Meg
machine.
There is already a version of 2.0 for the A1000, which developers have been
able to use for some time … making this available to A1000 owners would
be a very cheap and easy upgrade path (although you could not use the
enhanced video modes of course)

Just for info…. the official Commodore news release announcing the
release of DOS 2.0 (nwrl.03.0991) specifically mentioned availability for
A500, A2000 and A3000. Is silent on A1000.
Of course that doesn't mean that a properly equipped A1000 (ie hardware
upgrades) couldn't run it, or that Commodore may not later officially
support it.

I had to pull out the A2620 board to get 2.04 going. Slow pig.

I am, and have been running 2.x on a 2500 for quite a few months now. The
A2620 has to have a new set of ROMs but works fine under 2.04 with the new
ROMs.
