Can you or anyone help??
I have an IBM compatible and am online using it now.
I also have an AMIGA and would like to download files on my IBM and then
use them on my AMIGA …… can I do this?
I do not have any comms software for my AMIGA.

You can do this in several ways. I would suggest that you invest in a
commercial program called CrossDOS from Consultron. You should find it at
any Amiga dealer – local or mail order – for well under $30. It will let
you use your Amiga drives for either Amiga or for MS-DOS, just by using the
correct name for the drive according to the system you want it to read or
write. It is very dependable and almost invisible once you have it
installed. I don't know what I'd do without it!
There is a similar program here for downloading, in Library 11 of
AmigaTech:

Many people find this to work well, but I personally prefer CrossDOS and
have found it more dependable – and it costs so little, too!
Anyway, once you have one of these installed, you can put your 3 1/2"
MS-DOS into your Amiga drive and read your program into the Amiga or copy
it to a disk that works under AmigaDOS. Then you would use it just as
though you had downloaded to your Amiga in the first place.

I'm not a sysop but if you have CrossDos on your Amiga you can read and
write IBM (720K) 3.5 " disks with no problem what so ever.

Betty, Does CrossDos let programs like SID (the dir. utility) "see" the IBM
(Invented By Murphy) disk so you could use that instead of the CLI like
Dos-2-Dos. Also, does it do a "translation" of the EOL char. that is
different on the two platforms?

Yes, a CrossDOS volume appears to any program running on the Amy. I use a
Software Distillery directory utility (still in beta) all the time.
TurboText, WP and indeed every other program that I have tried will read
and write the MSDOS volume. Just remember that CrossDOS will truncate file
names to the MSDOS standard size. I believe that .info files are also
created with an extension of
inf for those programs that are writing icons. Of course the ICONS are not
useable.
WB 2.x adds the ability to copy files (and other operations) by creating
'dummy' icons or even by selecting and draging the filename. This also
works on CrossDOS mounted volumes.

I've not tired CrossDOS with SID, because I don't use SID. I do use
Browser, and it works with CrossDOS. That's the only one I have tried.
Yes, my text comes out correctly when I read from a CrossDOS disk, and goes
back correctly when I save it back.

There are several utility programs that allow you to read IBM formatted
diskettes on an Amiga (CrossDos is one example, and the one that I use, and
it works VERY nicely). The only restriction is that the diskette must be
formatted at 720K (for IBM) since "Amy" can't handle the 1.00Mb (and
greater) formatted diskettes. I have been successful in writing binary
files (compressed libraries and executable programs) to a diskette in an
IBM and then reading (or uploading) the files to my Amiga via a logical
drive created by CrossDos that is able to read the IBM formatted diskette.
I can also write out data to the same disketted from my Amiga and then read
it on an IBM. Only other caution is that messy-dos machines don't like long
file names whilst this is not much of a problem with "Amy".
