I HAVE JUST RECIEVED WORD FROM A RELIABLE INSIDE SOURCE THAT SPC IS
FIXING TO AXE SUPERBASE 4 FOR THE AMIGA!!!
Let's get our Word Processors out, start writing letters and give them
a Word Perfect campaign, if we get them enough letters maybe we can stop
this nonsense again. When are these software giants going to realize they
can't treat us like this, we have more printers humming than they have
people to handle the paper work! You can also send E-mail to SPC here on
CI$.
This is the only high end, general business product available for the
Amiga. It is also read and write compatable with thier MSDOS product.
My source tells me that SPC has already set in motion the processes to
sell off the Amiga version, so we can't delay.
I will try to get a user ID to send Email to, but you can go right now
to the SPC forum (Go SPC) and state your support. Do it.

While we are discussing rumors here. I read on another network that SPC
was selling the Precision Amiga line to Oxxi, and that Oxxi intends to
continue the product.

If SPC sells SB4 A to Oxxi, will they include the source? and the sourc
to future versions of SB4W to Oxxi? I doub't it and if this is so how can
the Amiga version remain compatible with the Windows version? Right now
superbase is completely read/write compatible on all files, records, and
DLM programs, ie if you develop it on windows it will run on the Amiga (not
exactly true, the Forms have to be redone for the amiga graphics). and that
is no small point! I have heard (and this IS rumor) that the networking
version for the amiga is almost ready, and that alone would go a long way
towards being able to sell the boss on putting an Amy on the network.
All in all IF they do sell off, I can't think of a better company than
Oxxi, although my only 1st hand experience with them is Draw 2000, their
reputation is good. But I would rather the same development team which has
done such an excellant job so far continue.

Speaking as someone who does not work for SPC or Precision any longer, I
think that it is fair to say that IF these rumors are correct, and IF Oxxi
is the company that is supposedly taking over SB4A, then the chances are
most likely that any rumored sale would include source, and probably also
access to future source for the future product (tho' I don't know that that
definitely means continued "common look & feel" since the two companies may
have different view on how an app should look, etc).
As to network versions of SB, consider this: Precision had said forever
that the only network it would guarantee compatibility with is that
produced by CBM, which was to be a Novell NetWare "clone" (actually
developed directly from NetWare source provided by Novell) ported to the
Amiga by Oxxi. The PC version is fully NetWare compatible, and the Amiga
version is directly derived from PC source.
Now if you take all of those factors together, and add in the possibility
that Oxxi may be producing this Amiga NetWare on its own, what exciting
possibilities does that suggest to you?
Of course, all of this is hypothetical….
One thing I think is for certain tho is that writing to SPC to attempt to
change any course of action which they may have decided upon will prove
futile. Consider that Amiga software sales (including Superplan, SB2, etc)
were only 7% of Precision's annual revenues, and total Precision revenues
are only about 10% of SPC's total annual revenues… I'm no mathematician,
but that suggests to me that we're talking about a paper campaign to have
someone re-evaluate the disposition of less than 1/2 of 1% of revenues, not
a winning battle….

If what you say is true, then it could mean a rosy future for Superbase
Amiga. Still it never hurts as a user to let the company, which produces a
product that you own, know how you feel about the future of that product.
As for network software, everybody is still waiting for netbios
compatibility, if nothing else, it saves the cost of constantly buying
separate CD-ROM drives, tape streamers etc. Let's hope it doesn't take
forever.

If you are no longer working for either SPC or for Precision – mind telling
us where you are working? Still in the Amiga community, I hope!
Only in the Amiga market in a rather peripheral way. I'm now Pres of the
Windows and [OS/2] Presentation Manager Association, a purely PC pursuit.
Amazingly, I'm still spending a lot of time on the SB forums: do you think
I oughta get paid for it, deduct it from my taxes, or just call it good
will (is that tax deductible?)<G>?
