Am I missing something or doesn't the "Last message you've read: " message not
mean anything? The number it indicates never seems to have anything to do with
reality? What gives here?

Bill,
The high message counter is based on how you read messages, and on how
you leave the forum.
If you exit the forum by hanging up, it doesn't get re-set and if you
only read marked messages it doesn't get re-set, but if you read new messages
via the RN or RTN command (or via BRO) it should get re-set to the highest
message you've read.
