I recently wrote E-Mail to Mr. Peterson of Word Perfect Corp. concerning
their (WP Corp) abandoning of WP for Amiga. The following is the reply I
received. (Apologies to Mr. Peterson if he objects to my submitting this,
but I feel it important to the Amiga Community!)

Subj: WP for Amiga
We put in a lot of work on WP5.0 for the Amiga. We were writing the
product in C, and were fairly close to releasing the product. Unfortunately
we had some problems with the Amiga C compiler, and maybe some other system
software, which prevented us from finishing the product.
We asked Commodore for help, and they said there was nothing they could do
for us. So we dropped the project. (This just happened two weeks ago.)
We have reassigned the Amiga programmers to other projects, and we have no
plans to continue the project.

The letter sets the tone that we've lost a software developer. Some will
say good ridance, others will be saddened. All of us will lose even more
if we don't voice our opinions to Commodore and/or Word Perfect Corp.

There is more than one C compiler for the Amiga, and Commodore doesn't own
any of 'em. You talk with that vendor to get a bug fixed. Maybe they found
out how slow their code runs and wanted the compiler vendor to fix their
'bug' by making their executables 10X faster! (Tongue in cheek, obviously).

Rodger, Sounds like a cop-out to me. If WPCorp had a problem with their
compiler why didn't they go to the producer/developer of the compiler? Why
is it that other (Amiga) developers of significant products seem to get the
job done (with such buggy tools)? Why is it that WPCorp talks out of both
sides of their mouth?

It's incredible to think that someone from WP could even *think* that they
couldn't get the project off the ground because of 'buggy compilers'. I
suppose they are going to blame their buggy first releases of WP on the
compilers too?
Oh well. It just goes to show what WP thinks of the average mentality of
the Amiga user.

I agree with you now Steve. Even so, we've lost a developer. I asked "Pete"
why they didn't go to the Company that wrote the compiler. I got only that
they had lost too much money on the Amiga product. Yeh! Right!
