#Surface quantification

Hi !
I'm a med student at the University of Luebeck, Germany. For my doctoral thesis
I'm working on the quantification of skin-structure.
Since enlarged skin looks a bit like a geological surface I was wondering if
anyone in this forum can help me finding algorythms and/or computer programs
for the quantification of three dimensional surfaces.
The software I've been working with calculates the relation area to surface,
but that is a rather meaningless value. The other parameters calculated are
just based on 2 dimensional profiles.
I would really appreciate any help !

Hi Konstantin,
I remember an article several years ago that most geologic surfaces appear to
be best approximated by fractal surfaces. I'm not that familiar with the math
involved, but you might try looking for references on fractal geometry. Also
there is a company called <<Rockware>> that advertises in most of the
geological journals. They may have analysis software that would work.

thanks for your answers… hope to find something…
:fractals – I've read the book from Mandelbrot "Fractal Geometry of Nature" but
it is quite difficult to use fractal formulas… 🙂 And it is not very likely
that it will help me to disrciminate between two surfaces.
What I thought of is a software that compares two landscapes and outputs
parameters like number of peaks and/or area of plain surface etc…
