I'm looking for updates on portable cd-rom drives. So far I have come
across the NEC-CDR 36, and a new one by Sanyo ROM-PD-1. Access speed seems
to be the main problem. Would you know of others that you have found to be
better? Any info will be much appreciated.

Toshiba has a new portable drive with plastic case that uses the same
battery as the AT&T Safari notebook computer.
By the way, you mentioned the Sanyo — is that available in the US?

Thanks about the Toshiba, I'll look out for it.
The Sanyo I saw it in the UK PC Direct. It is called ROM PD-1
but it has access speed from 800ms to 1.3s, however, it functions fully as
CD player with play forward etc keys, and has built in Centronics port (in
UK, from Optech LTd, tel UK 0252-714340; fax
UK- 0252-711121). Since it a Sanyo I'd expect it to be in US too.

sounds interesting. I do hope it's sold in the US; Sanyo people at the
Microsoft CD-ROM conference earlier this year didn't sound too positive
about that when I asked them.

In limited research of protable CD's I came across two:
Pinnacle CD-100
About $400
Claimed 600 MS access time
Pinnacle Micro 800-553-7070
Liberty Systems 115 Series
About $1000
Claimed 380 MS access time
Liberty Systems (408)-983-1127
I know nothing beyond a marketing brochure, so don't think I am
recommending these. Just passing on the info I found.

Dear Randy,
Thanks about the info, perhaps Database+, or PC Mag. might have some
review.
It seems that thanks to MS Multimedia etc, a lot more of these CDROMs will
be appearing soon
