#IPAS Demo Reel
8 messages in this thread
Hey, I just saw the IPAS demo reel yesterday at Cyber Arts in Pasadena. Bob
Bennett, Tina Mills, and Garth S. were there to give the 3D Studio Master
Course. They did a great job, but I had to duck out to see the latest 7th
Guest demo.
Anyway, the IPAS reel was AWESOME! I can't wait until its released to the
public! One of the best sequences was the Lens Flare Filter, incredible! As
a suggestion, for the final demo, try panning the camera target past the
sun, while the camera itself sits in one location without moving. That
should make the lense flares pivot around the center of the screen.
For example, the picture in the brochure shows the flares going from upper
right to lower left. If the camera were to pan to the right, the flares
should pivot/rotate and run from upper left to lower right. Right? Anyway,
I did not see that effect on the demo reel.
I'm really looking forward to getting the IPAS SDK, if Chris ever gets it
out…:-( HighC and Pharlap SDK are still collecting dust on my shelf…
BTW, that last Email you sent me got destroyed, I just installed a 1.2GIG
SCSI, and had it terminated incorrectly. (No terminating resisters, just a
hidden jumper). So the MAIL.MSG file that had your Email message got
corrupted. I hope you remember what it was about.

Sheesh… that's not our IPAS demo reel! It's just a bunch of little tests
that we did during development to test this stuff out. It's not even CLOSE
to what the IPAS reel is going to be. Unfortunately, however, it's going
to take us a few months to finish it, so for now, all we've got to show
people is tests. We've done about twice as much stuff since that was
hacked together, so the new "test" reel that we cut this week is going to
blow that one away.
Regarding the lens flare… Jamie set that shot up with a sun object that
was "infintely" far from the scene, so that when you move around the scene,
the sun doesn't move. I already complained to him about it, and the next
version of that shot will have the target moving around, which makes the
flare rotate beautifully around the screen.
What did you think of the fireworks exploding in the shape of the Adesk
logo? That and my "ascending into heaven" shot are my two favorites (along
with the Venus disintegrating into particles).
Send me some email to jog my memory, and I'll try to pick up where I left
off on the last message.

Where can I get a chance to see these tapes?!?!?
Since they're not actual tapes, the only place they're being shown at the
moment is wherever Bob Bennett happens to show up for a 3DS demo (plus I
showed some stuff at last week's SF 3DS users group mtg). Once we come up
with a new tape, I'm sure it'll be sent out to dealers, but that will
likely be a few months from now.

Ok, then, since I missed the 3DS meeting, where are his next stops?
I've got no idea when or where Bob's going to be next, sorry. But if
you're interested in demos of the IPAS routines, you might want to check
out the 6 megabytes of demos in DL1.

"Oh, now I see" said the blind man. Well I still think its great anyway. As
far as the ascention into heaven, I don't remember that one. Yes, I thought
the Fireworks exploding into the ADesk logo was great! It would be cool to
keep shooting more and more fireworks into the same shape until it becomes
pure light. Then fade in the same shape as molten gold with a few highlight
sparkles.
As for Venus exploding into spheres, I would just rip off The Lawnmower Man
and explode a human, fully texture mapped model. Turn off the gravity and
link the spheres to a rotating dummy object so they rotate around the
original place where the man used to stand.
Speaking of Lawnmower Person, I ran into the Producer at Cyber Arts, and it
looks like there is a serious future for 3D rendered sets. Thier next movie
(a Sci Fi) will use this method extensively. Also, Lawnmower Person set the
precedent of NTSC res animation for Motion Pictures. Which means that 3DS
is ready for the big time!
Anyway, great job on the routines. Take a break, go whomping, its the best
way to exfoliate your body!<g>
