Microp2217 Discontinued?

Does anyone have a definitive answer regarding the harddrive DPS is going to replace the now discontinued Micropolis 2217A with? Was it axed due to reported overheating problems? (I think I read somewhere that it was going to be replaced by a Conner drive). Is this drive (and the PAR drivers) currently available? Thanks! -Scott Lawrence

Scott, The 2217a was not axed for overheating problems. They had a long production run. I believe it was discontinued because for instance Conner is coming out with faster drives, supposedly there's a 2 gig in the works which DPS hopes will replace the 2217a. I've worked with the 1.2 and its quite a bit faster but not as much of the drive is usable. If you can still get a 2217A, which you should be able to, that's your best bet if you need large storage capacity. If you want the lowest compression the Conner is the better choice. Its a difference of 3.8 and 4.5 Mb per second transfer rate. John

John: When you tested the Conner drive what BLF and QF were you able to achieve with a near empty drive for say a 600 frame animation. Actually I'm more interested in the QF rating for recording video than animation.

Hi Don, I couldn't tell you as the unit I was testing was for a speaker support type environment and they didn't get the TBC. John

John, Talked to DPS today….the drive they are now recommending to replace the discontinued Micropolis drive is the Conner CFA1275A–1.27gig/12ms. which retails for roughly $550. -Scott

The Mics are still available but you have to ask around. Just depends, as I outlined previously whether you want more storage with lower compression around 3.8 or higher comperssion 4.5 less storage. There is a new Conner in the works with higher capacity but it has yet to materialise. John
