#ATI VGA Wonder "hangup"
8 messages in this thread
I've seen several people now discussing the apparent "lock up" phenomenon
which occurs when one attempts to use 3DS Rel. 2 on a ATI VGA Wonder S-VGA
card. I've even noted people saying that those of us you are unfortunate
enough to be using this card should be sure were are not using the Rel. 1
drivers with this card. OK… so where can I find the proper driver to rid
me of this troublesome bug? (3DS Rel 2 "hangs" whenever I try to view a
flic from within the 3D Editor or Keyframer). I'm led to believe this is a
problem unique to users of the ATI VGA Wonder. Thanks in advance for the
help. 🙂
Ah ha… Another ATI VGA Wonder problem… You should immediately get
ahold of a current drive from one of the two driver manufacturers:
Vibrant: 512/250/1711
or
Panacea: 603/437/5022
That ought to do it for ya,

Based on msg 25720, the problem occurs when viewing flics from within 3DS
2.0. A new driver from us or Vibrant will not fix that problem, since there
is not yet ADI support for animation playback.

Chris, doesn't the ATI card offer VESA-compatible playback? If not, why
not?

I have a Gateway 386/33 with ATI VGA Wonder 512K. Ani Pro, aaplay,
Windows, Autocad, 3dsR1, etc. all ran fine with standard ATI drivers.
3dsR2, though, hung after playing animations from the keyframer or the 3d
Editor. It did not hang if I played an animation from the Material Editor.
I guessed that 3dsr2 was not really hung; it was just not being singalled
to redraw the screen when switching back to 640×480 VGA mode for wireframe
mode. In fact, while hung, you can actually save your work and exit the
program if you remember the keyboard equivilents of the mouse commands.
To solve the problem: Download the file ATIDLX.ZIP from ATI's BBS. It
contains the DL-XPress/386 drivers for Autocad and 3DSR1. These work
beautifully with 3DSr2. I can run in 800×600 mode for wireframe, and
performance seems very good. Since installing this driver, I have not had
any problems video-wise.
Good to know! Should also have been fixed in 3DS release 2.01 – did you
try that yet?
You might want to check those release 1 drivers with the File/Safe Frame
function. They shouldn't work.

Funny you should ask this question now. I just called ATI yesterday, and
they told me that the VGA Wonder drivers for 3DSr2 haven't been written
yet, and are due out sometime in the next month.
