animator to tape

Gregory, Thanks for the quick response. It sounds like the "frame by frame"
recording process
Thanks for the quick response. It sounds like the "frame by frame"
recording process using Flitape would work well for somthing like a
promotional tape that we would use again and again. With our continued
focus here in the office to keep as much as possible on the desk-top and
affordable, I am still interested in exploring the potential of what you
have called "live" recording.
I assume you mean using Aniplay to simply run our .flcs directly to tape
using some sort of convertor. More and more of our staff have a need to
produce "quick and dirty" visual support tools for design development
meetings, etc. What do you know about the limitations of this type of
process and can you recommend any hardware/software solutions.

Tom:
You're welcome!
Yes, Aniplay direct to tape 'live' is a quick and dirty solution. Try the
Targa series of boards for a proven solution.
We just ordered the RGB Dynamics scan converter for doing things like that.
I will let you know when it comes in how we fare with it.

Is the RGB Dynamics converter you are talking about the new Translator for
$2300? I've got one coming as well. I had a prototype box in my place a
week ago to record a demo. Looked pretty clean.
Yes, it is! Glad you like it – we already sold a few of them sight unseen,
and I haven't had one in-house long enough to test it!
Greg Pyros
The Translator seems to work pretty good, but I must admit we found a
problem with it yesterday. I'm getting a banding signal across part of the
display when playing back off of Hi-8. Haven't hooked it up to a waveform
yet, but I suspect it's either a scan rate problem or a level problem.
I'm using the box to output DVI (Digital Video Interactive)
applications, mostly, but am also offering the use of the box as a service
to our clients. I'm sorta waiting for OTTO to come out as well, to see how
it does. Seen it yet?
[B [B [B [/exit I don't suppose you could recommend any options for a VCR?
I'm looking to but one very soon, and I'd like to make sure it'll work.
Also, what equipment are you using to dump your images to tape? I'm new to
all of this and would very much appreciate some experienced advice. Thanks,

There are lots of options for VCR's out there. But there are many
questions that need to be answered first. Are you talking about single
frame recording (the best solution) or "live" recording direct from Ani
Pro? And the next question, of course, is the good ol' What is your
budget?
Hint: The answer to the first has a major bearing on the second – we're
talking the difference between $1,000 to $5,000 to $10,000 to over $20,000.
And, yes, you can see the difference between all of them!

Thanks for the reply! Geez, I wasn't expecting that. I saw a "frame by
frame" VCR on sale for about $250 (4 heads, etc.) and I thought WOW!
better jump on it. I guess I'll wait and do some more research. Is there
really a $20k VCR on the market? I would hope it does the animations for
you (g)! By the way, where did you learn your 3D Studio? Surely not all
from the tutorial (I'm not, in any way, knocking the tutorial). It seems
much more intense than some of the tutorial examples outline, and I' d like
some insight on some future training. Thanks again for the quick reply!
Dwayne
Dwayne:
Wow! A 'single frame' VCR for $250! sign me up for 10! <big grin> You can
get a 1" or D1 or D2 Sony deck for over $100,000 with all the goodies, if
you really want! But I wouldn't go above $20,000, personally. But you'd be
surprised at how many companies do!
For your second question, I learned 3DS 1.0 on my own (remember, I have
used AutoCAD for 8 or 9 years!). Then I took a 5 day class at Autodesk,
and just recently took a 2 day 3DS R2 update class there. There are some
advantages to being a dealer for all this stuff!!

Dwayne,
For Autodesk training in your area call 1.415.491.8222 for the name
of the nearest Authorized Training Center, if you don't already know. Let
the people at that number know that you are looking for Multimedia training
and if it's not yet available in your area please let the center nearest
you know you're interested so they can take the steps to become a
Multimedia Training Center.
Thanks

Thank you Ted! I very much appreciate you response, and I think I'll give
it a call. My "dealer" is about 3 hours away (for various reasons), and he
hasn't even taken the time to call me if either my 3D Studio OR my Autocad
12 have been installed correctly. It's okay, I get caught up in my busy
day, too (g). It would be nice to get some technical help, but I'm unsure
what is close, so I'll call. Thanks again. Dwayne
I guess you can't believe everything you read! It says in the add "frame by
frame". I've used AutoCAD since Release 2.5, and I've customized it since
2.6. I'm all too familiar with the learn on your own thing. Anyway, I was
looking at possibly finding an easier way to get "neck-deep" in 3DSR2 (this
is my first cut at Studio). Dwayne
