#CD One Off Systems

We've looked at the one-off packages out there and for us, it came down to
CD-ROM Strategies CD-GEN or Optical Media International's QUICK TOPiX
driving a Philips CDD-521. They are neck and neck on features. CD-GEN is
DOS while Quick TOPiX is Windows. Either will drive the Sony or Philips
recorder. Though the Sony has a larger buffer, we went with the Philips
because of price. We also didn't care for the exclusive dealership
arrangement Sony has with Trace Mountain and the forced bundling of the
Sony ISO Formatter (command line) software.
We got the CD-GEN/Philips package from DataDisc for $7895. DataDisc is at
800-328-2347. CD-ROM Strategies is at 714/733-3378. Talk to Ash Pahwa,
who wrote CD-GEN (actually produced under contract by Tata Unisys in

With software prices around $2,500, we may just add another package if it
has a key feature not in CD-GEN. We've played around with an old version of
CD Formatter from Crowninshield and may test the to-be-released version of
Meridian's Personal Publisher.

I'd rather generate the ISO discs via. the Mac …. if possible, do any of
these packages support this? Also what about red-book audio?

Rumor Time! I heard today that Apple is due momentarily to announce an
Apple-labelled one-off system, based on Sony's system (in spite of the
arrangement with Trace), including software for about $7K. The
announcement was to have been made last week, but hasn't happened yet, so
status is uncertain. But this would apparently meet your need.
Also, from Ignorance Corner, I thought QuickTOPIX from OMI would do a 9660
disc from the Mac platform. Am I off base?

I believe you are right about QuickTopix. Sine I've done alot of work with
OMI … they will probabilly get my order.
The Apple system sounds interesting, if they support ISO9660 and Red-Book
Audio.

Optical Media has MAC CD-ROM generating software that can give you ISO, Mac
HFS and Audio using something like Sound Tools edit list.
The Sound Tools edit list on either a hard disk or dat tape. I'm also
pretty sure they support Red Book audio.
William: The OMI packages support the Mac. KJM
