#HP LJ 4 HELP!!??!!

Hmmmm……I need a lil' help. Tomorrow, I pick up my HP LJ4!!! Yay!!
Except for one little thing…..Printer Drivers-support for Amiga…etc. I
was in the market already for a GOOD laser printer, and, was about to
purchase the LJIII with PS when I heard about the LJ4. So, having that
inexcusable urge to get the "latest & greatest" I went ahead and ordered
one from my dealer. Now, I PRESUME itz at least 100% backward compatible
with the III (I should say I HOPE 🙂 ) so that the current 2.1 or PD
LJ driver's should drive it, at least to 300 dpi. BUT, what kind of supp
support is out there for it, especially the 600 dpi level???? Does ANYONE
in the GREAt Amiga community have any info on this? Is anyone working on
it??? I already spoke to Soft-Logic tech support and the best I got from
them (for a PageStream driver) was," welllll, we will be supporting
it…….long sigh…….. SOMETIME in the future." THAT scared me a lil'
as I work predominantly in PageStream. In conclusion, I just hope that a
driver will come along for it, or, should I say DRIVERS…as in both
Preference's and PageStream. If anyone has info…please relay it here or
via E-Mail…thanx…. Ps….if someone is working on, or planning to work
on a driver for this baby, and needs a Beta-Tester…feel free to contact

I'm new to this thread. I want a LJ4 so bad I can taste it. At high
resolution. Could you tell me where you are getting it and how much you're
paying?
Hey guy…sure…. I got it today from a dealer in Staten Island, NY called
Computers & Parts Unlimited. This dealer is not my usual and handles mostly
IBM bunk, BUT, he did have the best deal on the LJ4. His upfront price is
$1450.00 ( approximate), but, he has a GREAT lease deal. If oyur

I have a LaserJet driver in the libs (called HP_LJ.lzh). It is good for
up to 300 DPI. I would like to support the LJ4, but I need some
information on doing raster graphic at 600 DPI. Right now I am trying to
get the information from HPPeripher. Should have something in a couple of
weeks if I can get the info I need. So just stay in touch, okay!

Kelly, Thanx…I have your driver sitting in my prefs and will look forward
to trying it. As it stands rite now I am in the middle of a major
transformation in my system. I WAS currently running an A500 with a CSA MMR
030 at 33.33, a single q240lps, and like 8 megs of ram. Well I now sit with
a slowww A500 and like 3megs total (I had 4.5megs on the CSA) since I just
sold my CSA. And the rest of my system is about sold too. I am awaiting
delivery of a 3000 with a GVP040 and a syquest88 and a another quantum, and
18megs,etc. Sooooo, I took delivery of the LJ4 today, but categorically
refuse to attach it too my 500… ;{) . I should have my new, blown out
system by this coming Monday..so, if you need some help with the driver,
maybe it'll work out fine. Anyway, thanx again for the reply…talk to you

Frank, the info I need is slow in coming and is not quite what I expected
– some new commands, or they changed the commands used. I am not sure
which yet (I'm getting all confused!) This would be easier with a
manual.

Frank: you should be able to print at 300 dpi from PgS on the LJ4, unless
they changed something seriously, which I doubt, since we haven't had any
problems reported by our users. However, printing at 600dpi via parallel
with a graphics dump as done by PageStream or Professional Page, would be
too slow unless you ran it overnight. The parallel port is just such a
bottleneck. It would be 4 times as slow as the LJ3 at 300 dpi.
Something else to consider: you know the problem with Compugraphic fonts
dropping out at large sizes in PageStream? That would happen at half the
size at 600 dpi I am told. I know ProPage has a simliar restriction, but
I'm not sure if it would be affected by this as well. If their restriction
is due to the same limitation of the agfa code, then it would be.
For DTP, the LJ4M is a better deal, albeit much more expensive. This one
has PostScript builtin. It's still a great deal for a 600 dpi PostScript
printer.

Thanx for the quick reply Mike….. I appreciate the problems you mentioned
and do see that some work has to be done here…I am curious, I am getting
GVP's IO extender board in a few d ays, and I KNOW that the serial ports
are VERY fast on it, I wonder if the parallel port on the board is better
than Commodores? Maybe it would be better to go straight Serial Port with
the IOextender to the HPLJ4? The serial ports on it are supposed to be able
to handle up to 625k p/sec. Any idea's on this, as I DID pick up the LJ4
today, though I haven't even connected it yet? I'm sure that as time
passes, better solutions will arise, I'm just trying to get the best
possible solution for now. (Ps…I got the PostScript Simm with the
printer, so I know that option exists….. 🙂 ). Thanx again, Frank
We don't have a LJ4 at the office, (Santa hasn't come yet this year), so
I'm not sure how fast it can handle on its serial port. You'll have to
check its manual.
