#NEC 84 and Adaptec

Hi,
I just got an NEC 84 CD-ROM drive. I have an Adaptec 1742A SCSI
interface, but I don't have any device drivers to run the NEC 84. Does
anyone know where I can get them? Also my hard drive is hooked up to the
Adaptec, it's a Western Digital Pirahna 204 meg, does anyone know if it has
terminators and how to move them to the NEC? Thanks in advance.

Try the COREL forum. The IBM hardware forum is frequented by Adaptec reps
from time to time. Usually terminators come in resistor packs. This is
assuming your drive or device is internal. You might try the IBM hardware
forum for specifics on your hard drive as well too ( concerning the
terminator).

I'm trying to get my Adaptec 1742A to recognize that I have an NEC 84J
CD-ROM. I have a Western Digital Pirahna 204 meg hard drive hooked up to
the Adaptec. It recognizes the hard drive but not the NEC. If any one has
any suggestions, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I think you will have to get drivers from the maker of the SCSI board.

Thanks, I'm trying to get the Corel SCSI drivers first.

As Kevin Moran says, you need drivers from Adaptec's ASW-410 group.
Speciifcally, they are ASPI4DOS.SYS and ASPICDR.SYS, which are working with
my NEC 84 and Adaptec 1542. I'm told the Corel equivalents work fine, too.

I'm going to try the Corel Drivers. But I was wondering do you need to
set a jumper on the NEC to tell it to turn on it's terminator or does it do
that automaticly? Also do you need to turn off the terminator for my hard
drive, wich is a Western Digital Piranha 204 meg? Basiclly what I'm asking
is do you need to mess with terminators or just load the driver? Thanks.

Daniel: I'm running a Toshiba CD-ROM off my 1742A with the Adaptec ASW-410
(v 2.1) ASPI DOS CD-ROM Device Driver package. Docs say it supports NEC
drives. It's around $59 street price. KJM

Thanks, I'm going to try the Corel drivers first. Did you have to mess
with any terminator switches to get your Toshiba to work? Did you have
anything else connected to your 1742A with the CD-ROM, like a hard drive?

The `rule of thumb' for termination is; terminate the the SCSI devices at
each `end' of the SCSI chain, but never terminate any devices in the middle
of the chain. Thus if you had an internal SCSI hard drive, and and
external CD-ROM attached to the same card, the card would be in the middle;
therefore the card's terminators would be removed, while the two drive
should be terminated.
If the card was attached to two interal (or external) devices, then the
card would be considered one end (thus terminated) and the furthest drive
away from the card would be the other end (also terminated). In this case
the drive in the middle would have it's termination removed. Hope this

Daniel: I have a Seagate 1.2GB hard drive on the SCSI bus. I did nothing
with the Toshiba DIP switches. KJM
