Help? I have recently purchased a NEC CDR-37 with an NEC SCSI card and
would like to install it in a Novell network fileserver. The fileserver is
a /286 running netware 2.2(5) rev A. I do not need to share the CDROM. NEC
tech support says the drive can be configured as another network drive
without a special driver but they weren't sure just exactly how to do it.
Does anyone have experience in this??
Is this a non-dedicated file server? If so, the DOS partition should be
able to access the drive just like in standalone mode.
Online sells the OPTI-NET VAP, which allows specific CD-ROM hardware to be
shared across a Novell network, but it sounds like this is not what you are
looking for.
NEC technical support is incorrect. CD-ROM drives cannot be attached to
NetWare servers without special drivers.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it's a non-dedicated file server. A VAP to allow
sharing is acceptable as long as the cost is not too high. I don't
necessarily need sharing but do need to access the CD from workstations.
Currently I can access the CD on the fileserver just as if installed on
aworkstation (i.e. local drive) but it's not accessible to workstations.
I'll give Online a call for their driver prices. Thanks again.

You may be able to use the OPTI-NET for DOS product to share the CD-ROMs
from the DOS side of the non-dedicated file server. This solution may be
more effective for supporting your existing NEC hardware.

Chris, I have tried Optinet but have recently used CD-SHARE and found that
it is much faster and cheaper. Have a look for a demo version on the
Artisoft BBS. Tom

Sam, It is not possible to install a Cd-ROM at a Novell server. You would
find it faster and safer to use it on workstation. With the SCSI card you
should be aware that it uses a memory address CC00-CDFF and if your are
using QEMM386 or EMM386 then use an exclude statement. Tom
There are a few products which all a CD-ROM player too be hooked up to the
Novell server. Corel has one, On-line systems, MDI's scsi-express and
Merridian (sp?) has one.

to the server, treating the discs as NetWare volumes. Because it is a
NetWare volume, it benefits from NetWare's dynamic cache, connectivity,

directly to the cd-rom device driver or requires the MSCDEX to be loaded.

Not possible to install a CD-ROM on a Novell server? Uh-oh, we'd better
pull all our ads off the market! <grin> Actually, there are a couple of
different companies offering CD-ROM/server solutions… drop by the Corel
forum (GO COREL) and I'll fill you in on our excellent product!
