I am in need of help in interfacing my CD-Rom (Chinon) with my Soundblaster
Pro Card. The CD has an audio jack on the front. The SB software such as
CD-Play does activate an audio CD and cause it to play through the audio
jack. However, I want it to play through the SB card itself. Do I need
the CD- drive that is specific to the SB card? If not, how can I interface
these two items?
If you have a CD Audio out on the back of the Chinon drive, you can purchase
the audio cable from CL (it's $6+SH). Otherwise you can use a 1/8" to 1/8"
stereo cable from radio shack and run it from the Jack on the front panel of
the CD-ROM to the Line In jack on the SBPro.
If you do have a Audio out on the back of the unit (i'm assuming it's
internal) you can buy the cable from CL, modify the CD-ROM end for your unit
and plug the cable into the CD-Audio in on the SBP card. This is what I did
for my Sony unit, this way I still have the use of the line in for my tape
deck or TV.

Thanks for the info. I will check out my CD one evening this week for
interface. Am I to infer that even with the CL CD-Rom drive, that Digital
data from an audio CD is first converted to sound (analog) before it is
input to the SB card? For example, if I were to use SB Pro's VEDIT2 with
CD as input source, the process would be CD Digital audio –> Audio Out
(like at the earphone jack) –> Audio in (to SB Pro) –> "re-digitized" via
SB Pro from analog input to SB Pro's digital format? Logically the process
would ask for goind audio CD-Rom digital format directly to SB's digital
format.
That's correct. The input from the CD-ROM to the SBPro is analog audio. The
next generation of SCSI-2 CD-ROM's are supossedly going to have direct
digital via the SCSI bus to the SCSI-2 controller card.
But for now it's analog.

Thanks for the input. This is all new territory for me, but the prospects
for multimedia are really interesting to watch develop.
